PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEFINITIONS Physical education, an integral part of total education process, is a field of endeavour which has as its aim the development of physically, mentally, emotionally and socially fit citizens through the medium of physical activities which have been selected with a view to realizing these outcomes.” : - Charles A Bucher

Central Advisory Board of physical Education and Recreation defines “Physical education as an education through physical activities for the development of total personality of the child to its fullness and perfection in body, mind and spirit”.

Aim of physical education Physical Education aims at the all-round development of the personality of the individual. Physical Education aims at making an individual physically fit, mentally alert, emotionally balanced and socially well adjusted .

PHYSICAL FITNESS Physical fitness is a state of health and well-being and, more specifically, the ability to perform aspects of sports, occupations and daily activities

COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS Health related physical fitness (HRPF) Perfomance related physical fitness(PRPF)

Health-related physical fitness 1-Muscular Strength Muscular strength is the amount of force a muscle or muscle group can exert against a heavy resistance 2- Muscular Endurance Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle or muscle group to repeat a movement many times or to hold a particular position for an extended period of time.

3- Cardiovascular Endurance Cardiovascular fitness (also known as cardiorespiratory fitness) is the ability of the heart, lungs and vascular system to deliver oxygen-rich blood to working muscles during sustained physical activity 4- Flexibilit y – range of motion 5- Body Composition Body composition is the amount of fat in the body compared to the amount of lean mass (muscle, bones, organs etc.) Or it is the percentage of body weight that is fat compared to other body tissue, such as fat, bone and muscle

SKILL-RELATED FITNESS/ PERFORMANCE RELATED PHYSICAL FITNESS Agility is the ability to change and control the direction and position of the body while maintaining a constant, rapid motion. Balance is the ability to control or stabilize the body when a person is standing still or moving. For example, in-line skating. Coordination is the ability to use the senses together with body parts during movement. For example, dribbling a basketball.

Speed - the rate at which someone can move all or part of their body when performing a movement or covering a distance. Power is the ability to move the body parts swiftly while applying the maximum force of the muscles. Power is a combination of both speed and muscular strength Reaction Time is the ability to reach or respond quickly
