I ntroduction to computing Health and Safety Measures in Using ICTs

Lesson Objectives D escribe health measures and computing related disorders D escribe safety measures in using ICTs D emonstrate how to apply health and safty measures in using ICTs Explore safety measures at workstations

What are some of the health issues/risk associated with the use of ICT tools?

Some health issues/risk include: Eye strain / Eye Fatigue / Eye Irritation Strain in Legs and Feet Upper and Lower Back pain (Neck and Waist) Repitive Strain Injury

What are some of the safety measures that can be practised to reduce risk?

Safety Measures (Eye Strain) Measures Tilt the screen slightly to prevent reflection or glare. M ake sure the screen is not too close to your face. P lace screen at eye level. A djust the contrast and brightness of your screen. Frequently look away from the screen.

Safety Measures (Leg Strain) Measures Always sit comfortablyy with your feet on the floor. Rotate yout ankles round in circles. Stand on your tiptoes and stretch upwards . Walk for about 30 seconds .

Steps to Overcome Reptitive Strain Injury Reach you arms and draw big circles in clockwise and anti clockwise direction Strech your arms out to the side as far as you can and then above your head. Interlock your fingers and push them out in front with your palm facing out.

Safety Measures ( Back pain ) Measures S tand and walk around at least every hour. Lean on one side of the chair and stretch your spine. Stand up and put your hands together, elbows out and twist right to left .

Other Safety Measures

Other Safety Measures Faulty Electrical Connection Replace faulty cords/cables A void use of cords without grounded pin. Avoid overloading sockets Train workers on fire safety issues

Other Safety Measures Slips, Trip, and Falls Clean up and spills immediately Put sign post within the workstation Avoid overloading sockets Train workers on fire safety issues

Proper Sitting Posture Always sit comfortably with you feet flat the desk on the floor and lower legs vertical Rotate your ankles round in circles under the desk Stand on tip toes and stretch upwards Stand up and march on the spot for 30 seconds

Strand: Introduction to Computing Sub-Strand: Health and Safety in the use of ICTs Assessment Identify two (2) health issues/risk associated with the use ICTs and d escribe how the safety measures that can be practised to reduce the risks. Mention any two (2) measures that can implemented in the workstation to reduce risks or hazards.
