Important nutrients in choosing healthful foods to have normal body weight

VITAMINS Vitamins help our body regulate all its functions. There are a lot forms of vitamins. One example is vitamin A which helps us to have good eyesight. Some food that contain vitamins are fruits such as apple and orange; and vegetables such as okra and beans.

MINERALS Minerals are essential for our body to properly work. One example of this is calcium which strengthens our bones and keeps our muscles strong and healthy. Some food that contain minerals are fruits such as avocado and grapes; and vegetables such as spinach and cabbage.

PROTEINS Proteins are needed for the normal growth of our body and it also repairs body cells. Some food that contain proteins are meat, fish, pork, beef, and eggs.

If we do not have enough vitamins and minerals in our body, it means that we have deficiency. If vitamin deficiency happens to us, there is a possibility that we might develop these diseases: VITAMIN DEFICIENCY

DEFICIENCY DISEASE OR DISORDER VITAMIN A Good and healthy eyesight. Night Blindness means poor vision in the dark. Our eyes will have a hard time looking at objects as they shift from light to dark areas. Prevention: Eat green leafy vegetables rich in vitamin A. VITAMIN B Overall health especially of the brain. Beri- beri is caused by vitamin B11 deficiency. It can affect the heart, circulatory system, and nerves; and decrease muscle strength. Prevention: Eat beans, meat, and fish.

DEFICIENCY DISEASE OR DISORDER VITAMIN C Stronger immune system. Scurvy leads to bleeding sores, tooth loss, anemia, and slower healing of wounds Prevention: Eat malunggay or oranges. VITAMIN D & CALCIUM Strengthening of the bones. Rickets happens due to deficiency in vitamin D and calcium. This will cause the bones to become weak and soft. If this happens, it can delay our growth, cause pain in the spine, and make the muscles weak. Prevention: Drink milk every day.

DEFICIENCY DISEASE OR DISORDER IRON Proper blood circulation. Anemia is when our body does not have the right amount of healthy red blood. cells in our system. This will lead to fatigue, weakness, and headache. Prevention: Eat beef, meat, and beans. IODINE Body's metabolism. Goiter is characterized by abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. This is usually painless; however, it makes it difficult for us to swallow or breathe. Prevention: Put iodized salt in our food.

DEFICIENCY DISEASE OR DISORDER PROTEIN Building strong muscles. Protein-Energy Malnutrition or PEM is a serious type of malnutrition due to lack of proper nutrition especially protein. This can cause delay in growth, mental changes, and weak muscles. Prevention: Eat well-balanced nutritious diet.

What is the importance of choosing the right food? Our food choice can greatly affect our weight and overall nutrition. Children with normal weights tend to be healthier and have longer lives compare to malnourished children.
