HOW TO PLAY I will read or show you a statement about health trends and issues. - If you AGREE with the statement, move to the left side of the room. - If you DISAGREE, move to the right side of the room. - Once everyone has chosen a side, I will ask a few volunteers to briefly explain why they chose that answer. -

LESSONS Definition/meaning of global health 8 Millennium development goals (MDG) The 10 Global Health Trends, Issues, and Concerns
The term “ GLOBAL HEALTH ” rose in popularity along with the rise of globalization. Both terms improved public awareness of vulnerabilities and shared responsibilities among people for the different injustices in the world.
pertains to various health issues, concerns, and trends which go beyond national boundaries and call for global initiatives for the protection and promotion of peoples’ health across the world. - Ilona Kickbush (2006) GLOBAL HEALTH

8 Millenium Development Goals (MDG)
Developing countries, especially in Africa and Asia, face extreme poverty and hunger, causing malnutrition that harms health, learning, and economic growth. To address this, key solutions include improving education, promoting gender equality, creating jobs, investing in agriculture, strengthening child nutrition programs, and supporting vulnerable nations in times of crisis. 1.ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER –
Educated individuals, especially women, are more likely to seek healthcare, ensure proper nutrition, practice good sanitation, and vaccinate their children. This leads to healthier families and better child survival. Children who receive primary education are more likely to delay marriage, practice family planning, know their rights and duties, secure employment, avoid infections like HIV/AIDS, and support their families and communities. 2. ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION
Gender equality means valuing and treating all genders equally, giving them equal opportunities in education, work, politics, and health. This empowers women, boosts the economy, and reduces the impact of financial crises. It can be achieved through early childhood programs, promoting women’s political rights, better reproductive health policies, gender-focused education, fair labor opportunities, and supporting vulnerable nations in times of crisis. 3. PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY & EMPOWER WOMEN –
Reducing child mortality requires better nutrition, healthcare, and infrastructure. Strengthening health programs and policies is key, including immunization, maternal health support, improved reproductive care, and proper nutrition for mothers and children. 4. REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY
Maternal health affects not just mothers but the whole family, helping reduce poverty, gender inequality, disabilities, and birth-related deaths. It can be improved through proper maternal nutrition, education on birth spacing, teaching youth its importance, and ensuring access to quality prenatal, postnatal, and obstetric care. 5.IMPROVED MATERNAL HEALTH
Emerging diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria, and influenza harm national growth by causing job losses, worker shortages, and social crises. Children are especially vulnerable. Combating these diseases requires prevention, treatment, and care through better housing, access to medicines, safer sex education, TB screening and treatment, and use of insecticide-treated nets against mosquito-borne illnesses. 6. COMBAT HIV/AIDS MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES
Investing in sustainable energy like solar, wind, and water creates jobs, supports businesses, and conserves non-renewable resources. A sustainable environment provides cleaner air, renewable energy, new job opportunities, and better sanitation. 7. ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Global partnerships involving the UN, WHO, World Bank, and governments help ensure fair trade, debt relief, and funding for poverty reduction, education, and social projects. Benefits include expanded trade, affordable medicine, poverty reduction, and improved ICT infrastructure. 8. GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT
MEMORY GAME PLAY
INSTRUCTION Choose one Millennium Development Goal from the list on the board. In your notebook, briefly explain what it is about, why it is important, and give one example of how it can be applied in daily life. You have 3 minutes to write. After that, I will call a few volunteers to share their answers.
THE 10 GLOBAL HEALTH TRENDS, ISSUES, AND CONCERNS
GLOBAL HEALTH TRENDS
TUBERCOLOSIS (TB) 1 COMMONLY KNOWN AS TB (TUBERCLE BACILLUS, IS A BACTERIAL INFECTION THAT CAN SPREAD THROUGH THE LYMPH NODES AND BLOODSTREAM TO ANY ORGAN IN YOUR BODY. IT IS OFTEN MOST FOUND IN THE LUNGS.
DRUG USE & ABUSE 2 IT IS PATTERNED USE OF A DRUG IN WHICH THE USER CONSUMES THE DRUG SUBSTANCE IN AMOUNTS OR WITH METHODS WHICH ARE HARMFUL TO THEMSELVES OR OTHERS.
HIV / AIDS 3 IT IS TRANSMITTED PRIMARILY VIA UNPROTECTED SEXUAL INTERCOURSE, CONTAMINATED BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS, HYPODERMIC NEEDLES, AND FROM MOTHER TO CHILD DURING PREGNANCY, DELIVERY, OR BREASTFEEDING.
NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE 4 NCD, CAN REFER TO CHRONIC DISEASES WHICH LAST FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME AND PROGRESS SLOWLY.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASE 5 ALSO KNOWN AS INFECTIOUS DISEASE OR TRANSMISSIBLE DISEASES. - THESE ARE ILLNESSES THAT RESULT FROM THE INFECTION, PRESENCE AND GROWTH OF PATHOGENIC BIOLOGIC AGENTS IN HUMANS.
CLIMATE CHANGE 6 A CHANGE IN GLOBAL OR REGIONAL CLIMATE PATTERNS ATTRIBUTED DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY TO HUMAN ACTIVITY. •“GLOBAL WARMING” IN SHEEP’S CLOTHIN; A LONG-TERM CHANGE IN THE EARTH’S CLIMATE.
MENTAL HEALTH 7 IT IS A LEVEL OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AND THE ABSENCE OF A MENTAL DISORDER.
IMMUNIZATION & VACCINES 8 - IT IS THE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE USE OF A SMALL AMOUNT OF A WEAKENED AND KILLED VIRUS OR BACTERIA OR BITS OF LAB MADE PROTEIN THAT IMITATE THE VIRUS IN ORDER TO PREVENT INFECTION BY THE SAME VIRUS OR BACTERIA. :WHEN YOU GET AN IMMUNIZATION, YOU’RE INJECTED WITH THE WEAKENED FORM OR A DISEASE. THIS TRIGGERS YOUR BODY’S IMMUNE RESPONSE, CAUSING IT TO EITHER PRODUCE ANTIBODIES AND THE LIKE.
ALCOHOL & TOBACCO ABUSE/ADDICTION 9 THE EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO. - CAUSES COMMUNICABLE AND NON COMMUNICABLE DISEASES.
MALARIA / OTHER VECTOR-BORNE MALARIA 10 CAUSES SYMPTOMS THAT TYPICALLY INCLUDE FEVER, FATIGUE, VOMITING AND HEADACHES. IN SEVERE CASES, IT CAN CAUSE YELLOW SKIN, SEIZURES, COMA OR DEATH. VECTORS ARE LIVING ORGANISMS THAT CAN TRANSMIT INFECTIOUS DISEASES BETWEEN HUMANS OR FROM ANIMALS TO HUMANS.
