Learning Targets

Have you tried walking in a very dark area? Can you easily move and see things around you even if it is dark?

When we feel cold our body needs what? What do we need in the middle of darkness?

HEAT LIGHT &

E N E R G Y

identify different sources of heat and light energy; describe the uses of heat and light energy. compare luminous and non-luminous materials. enumerate the importance of heat and light in our daily activities. Learning Targets

Learning Targets At the end of the session, I can:

Learning Targets 1.classify luminous and non- luminous materials ;

Learning Targets 2.enumerate fire safety procedures ;

Learning Targets 3. appreciate the role of light in their daily lives by actively participating in discussions

Intro d uction Energy can mean different things to different people. For some, energy means being lively and strong. For others, energy means being able to move or grow.

T h e h e at a n d li g h t f r o m t h e s u n is c alle d s o lar e ner g y . T h e s u n is t h e Earth’s primary s o u r c e o f h e at and li g h t . P la n t s al s o ne e d s u n li g h t t o m a k e t h e ir o w n foo d . Without the sun, no life can exist. The sun keeps your warm and lets you see.

How do you use the following sources of heat and/or light?

You also use electrical appliances to cook food. Ovens and microwaves use electricity to heat food.

Another source of heat and light is burning fuels. Burning fuels can produce fire to be used to cook food and keep us warm. Fuel includes gasoline, natural gas, coal, wood, ash, coconut husk, and coconut charcoal.

Fire is an important source of heat and light because it is useful in many things. However, fire can be dangerous. Why do you think so? What are we going to do? Why it is very important to learn the basic fire safety?

What do you do when it gets dark ?

We turn on the lights.

You use electricity to light up a bulb or a fluorescent lamp. When you do these, materials also heat up.

Do you know some ways that we can produce heat without producing light. ? ?

Try rubbing the palm of your hands against each other as hard as you can.

FRICTION Friction produces heat. It occurs when one object is rubbed against another object.

Food undergoes several changes within our body . As the food is changed, heat is also given off .

Imagine you are in a room with crowded people. What will you feel after 30minutes?

When there are many people in a room, the t e mperature warms up. It is because our body gives off heat.

Light enables you to see the beauty of nature. It allows you to read, pl a y a n d to m a n y pl a c e s.

Luminous m a terials or objects are materials that can give off their own lig h t.

Some objects do not produce their own light. They are called nonluminous materials .

How about the moon? At night, the moon is bright and seems to give off li g ht. Is it l uminous or non l uminou s ?

Moon is not a luminous object; it does not produce its own light. It only reflects the light from the sun.

Try fla s h i ng light in the fro n t o f t h e mirror. Does it bounce back?

If light strikes a sur f a ce a nd bounces back. It said to be reflected.

This explains why the moon, reflecting sunlight, is bright. Moon and mirror are nonluminous.

Why do you think heat and light are important?

Do you have any questions?
