Introduction Discovery learning is a technique of I inquiry based learning and i s considered a constructive based approach to education It was introduced by burner This popular theory encourage s learners to build on past experiences, and knowledge and their intuition imagination and creativity and search for new information to discover facts . Bruner belief that students must be active they must identify key principles for themselves rather than simply accepting teachers explanations .
Discovery method of teaching The children are being encouraged to be the discovers of the nature of Thinking children need to be engaged in ‘ real examination ’ and discovering things by the this use of enquiry and Discovery strategy in teaching . Discovery emphasize learning through experience enquiry generally means to find information to question and two investigate a phenomenon that occurs in the environment . Discovery is the main characteristics of enquiry learning through Discovery occurs when the main concept and principles of science are investigated and discovered by students themselves those activities such as experiments students investigate a phenomenon and draw conclusion by themselves teachers than lead students to understand the science concepts through the result of the enquiry thinking skills and scientific skills are these development through during the enquiry or Discovery process .
Characteristics It is inductive proceeding from the specific to general ones . Freedom is necessary in the discovery approach. The teacher helps the learners acquire knowledge, which is uniquely he is won because he discovers it for himself . The end half teaching, using this approach , is the acquisition of knowledge. The students and not the teacher should be actively involved in the process of Discovery. The students look at the knowledge that they have discovered has something new to them.
Ro le s of the teacher Patience is needed in this approach. He does not pressure his students but he give them enough time to formulate the expected generalisation. The teacher should not answer for the students ; of he can give close and hints instead he does not generalize for them .
Advantages of Discovery method The increases in intellectual potency. The shift from extreme sick to intrinsic motivation. The learning of the heuristic of Discovery ( how to learn ). The aid to conserving memory. Supports active engagement of the learner in the learning process. F o ster s curiosity. Enables the development of life long learning skills. Develops a sense of independent and autonomy.
Disadvantages of Discovery method Teachers are not trained properly to guide students learning through Discovery. Text books do not provide sufficient scope for Discovery learning. It is time consuming. No syllabus in constructed on the basic of Discovery method. Cognitive overload Kama potential to can confuse the learner in no initial form work is available, etc. ... Measurable performance ( compared to hard - core instructional designs ) is worse for most learning situations.
Main attributes of Discovery learning Exploring and problem solving. Taking responsibility for learning. Building New knowledge. Steps of guided Discovery learning . Exploration Invention Discovery
Conclusion Early research demonstrated that directed Discovery had positive effects on retention of information at 6 weeks after instruction various that of traditional direct instruction it is believed that the outcome of Discovery based learning is the development of enquiry Minds and the potential for life long learning.
