HISTORICAL ATTITUDES
TOWARDS DISABILITY
Instructor: Sir, Wendell Catam-isan
EDUC 104

– Disabilities were often misunderstood. Some
societies saw them as a punishment from the
gods, while others abandoned or mistreated
people with disabilities.
• Ancient Times
• Middle Ages
– People with disabilities were sometimes feared,
mocked, or seen as objects of pity. Others were
used as entertainment.

- Scholars and doctors started studying
disabilities more scientifically, though
discrimination and negative views still remained
strong.
• Renaissance to 18th Century
– Institutions were created to separate people
with disabilities from society. Many were not
treated well, but some reformers began
advocating for education and training.
• 19th Century

– Disability is now increasingly seen through the
lens of human rights. Laws and policies promote
equality, accessibility, and inclusion. Society is
working toward breaking barriers and
respecting people with disabilities as full
members of the community.
• Modern Times
