Location Gujrat is situated near the Chenab, 120 km north of Lahore. Prominent nearby locations include Jhelum, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin , Sialkot and Bhimber Azad Kashmir. The city is surrounded by many villages from which the local labour market is supplied.

Area and Population According to 1998, Area 3192 sq miles . According to 1998 Population and Housing Census, total population of Gujrat district is 20,48,000 persons. 10,26,000 are males 10,22,000 are females Density of population in the district is 642 persons per square Kilometre Population percentage break-up, Rural 72.3% Urban 27.7% Literacy Rate Sixth Number 62.18%

History Founded by Raja Bachhan Pal Gurjar in 460 BC Gujrat is one of those cities of sub-continent, which were planned at the time of construction. Two main battles between British and Sikh armies were fought in this district.

Battle of Chillianwala The Battle of Chillianwala was fought during the Second Anglo-Sikh War in the Punjab, now part of Pakistan. The battle was a strategic check to Britain, and damaged British prestige in India

Battle of Gujrat The Battle of Gujrat was the decisive battle of the Anglo-Sikh War, fought on 21 February 1849, between British forces and the Sikhs. The depleted Sikh army, weakened by lack of supplies, was defeated by the Bengal East India Company.

Only after winning the battle of Gujrat on 22 February 1849 did the British declare victory in Punjab

Railway Main Peshawar- Karachi railway line passes through Gujrat district. It linked with Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin , Sargodha, Gujranwala

Education Sir Syed Ahmad Khan named the region " Khita -e- Younan ", or "Territory resembling Ancient Greece, referring to the high number of educational institutes present in the area. The following universities and colleges are located in Gujrat .

Famous People Nawab Sir Fazal Ali, Head of Nawab Family of Gujrat and Founder of Zamindara College. Major Raja Aziz BhattiShaheed , a recipient of the Nishan -e- Haider (Pakistan's highest Military award) during the India-Pakistan war of 1965 was born in Laadian , village in Gujrat .

Major Muhammad Akram , another recipient of the Nishan -e- Haider during the India-Pakistan war of 17 December 1971, was born in Dinga , a village near Gujrat . Major Shabir Shrif Shaheed (born April 28,1943 in Kunjah , Gujrat District) was another recipient of the Nishan -e- Haider .

Elahi Chaudhry former President of Pakistan(In office14 August 1973 – 16 September 1978) also served as speaker of national assembly. Ch. Zahoor Elahi the head of chauhdery family and famous politician.

Late Alam L ohar and his son Arif L ohar famous folk singer also belongs to Gujrat . Both are famous for their chimta with which they sing.

Ejaz (full name Ejaz Durrani ) The Ranjha of Pakistani film industry was born in a remote village of JalalpurJattan , District Gujrat in 1935 .

Malka -e- mausequee Roshan Ara Begum was a very famous classical singer of Pakistan and India. She is the daughter of Ustad Abdul Haqq Khan. In 1948 she migrated to Pakistan settled in Lalamusa , a town of G ujrat . She also died there.

Gujrat is a land of great people with literary taste so this land have produced many writers and poets .

A rebound columnist Dr. Safder Mahmood belongs to small town Dinga district Gujrat .

Anwar Masood a great humorous poet of Punjabi and Urdu also belongs to Gujrat .

Another great poet, translator, writer Sharif kunjahi also belongs to Gujrat .

Javed Chauhdery the most readied columnist of Pakistan and now anchor person also belongs to Gujrat .

Pir Fazal Shah Gujrati He is the famous Punjabi poet. His poems are included in Punjabi curriculum .

Culture Sohni Mahiwal is a famous folk tale of the Punjab region. The heroine of the story, named " Sohni " (a Punjabi word, meaning "beautiful"), came from the Gujrat region.

Culture She used to meet her lover " Mahinwal " by crossing the Chenab river, sitting on a pitcher. The tale is still told to this day, and is an essential part of Punjabi culture .

Main Fruits : Citrus and Guavas. Besides, Mango, Jaman and Banana in minor quantities.

Main Vegetables : Turnip, Potatoes and Cauliflower are main vegetables grown in the district . Besides , Carrot, Peas, Onion , Tomato, Garlic, Chilies and Ladyfinger are also grown in the district in minor quantities.

Forests Location of Forests and Area Under A forestation: An area of 5,173 acres is under forest. There is also linear plantation of 662 Km alongside the roads/rails/canals in the district. Trees grown in the area are Kau , Phalai , Kikar and Shisham .

Overseas of Gujrat More than 300,000 people from Gujrat live overseas and contribute more than 3 billion rupees per year as foreign exchange. They are playing a vital role in economies of their host countries and are keenly interested in Gujrat affairs at all levels. People from all the three tehsils, Gujrat , Kharian and Sarai Alamgir represent Gujrat overseas.

Industry Gujrat has a unique status throughout the Punjab due to some of its manufacturing capabilities and productions. There are about 1,059 cottage level and small/medium/large scale industrial units operating in the district.

Pottery industry   District Gujrat produces low temperature pottery, flower pots and ceramic goods.

Furniture industry Gujrat is famous for its beautiful carved furniture. Furniture of Gujrat is fitted in provincial and national assemblies

Shoes and Rubber Tyre,Tube industry Servis Industries Limited is a publicly traded company and it is a part of Servis Group. Its annual revenue of US $ 45 million. It is the largest manufacturer of tyres and tubes for two-wheelers, and has been the largest exporter of footwear from Pakistan for a decade.

The company employs more than 4,000 people in its facilities located in Gujrat and Muridke . The company’s products are exported primarily to Germany, Italy, France and United Kingdom.
