5th Grade Social Studies and Science Learning Activity

Slide Content

Integrated Standards Based Activity Module 1 Jason Holt March 13, 2023 Content Area Reading and Writing for Elementary (Rdg 507) University of Phoenix

3 Critical Issues Affecting Content Area Literacy (K-8) Knowledge of content is enhanced through the basic foundations of literacy: listening, reading, writing and speaking. (Alber, 2014) Students need all the components of literacy to grow in their content knowledge in Math, Science, and Social Science. Alber makes the point in the article referenced above that we must engage students through not just listening but through reading, writing and speaking activities related to content knowledge. Vocabulary development is necessary for growth in content knowledge. While vocabulary development is crucial for students to make progress in their reading, it is equally important that they develop subject specific vocabulary for content areas. For example, I am currently teaching a unit with my 5th graders on metric and standard measurement. Vocabulary is essential for them to grasp any of the content related to measurement as they can only comprehend word problems when they have learned accurate vocabulary related to measurement. Reading comprehension builds content knowledge. In order for students to access 21st century skills in relationship to content knowledge, they must be growing in their ability to read and comprehend various forms of text. As students grow through the elementary years, they become more independent in reading and less dependent on content that is solely generated by the teacher. Reading comprehension gives students the tools to read a text related to the content they are studying and build their specific knowledge of new material.

6 Characteristics of Effective Literacy Teachers They build caring and nurturing relationships with students. Students learn best when they know they are loved and when they know they place confidence and trust in their teachers. They understand the importance of content and process in learning. They have both an in depth understanding of the content they are teaching as well as the best means of transferring this knowledge to their students. They are able to differentiate instruction for all learners. Students learn in many different ways and it is necessary for teachers to know how to meet students at their proximal zone of development. They need to know how to teach others through multiple modalities in order to help establish higher order thinking (Vacca et al., 2021). They need to be both flexible and easily able to adjust to the needs of their students (Vacca et al., 2021). They need to have a “strong general intelligence and verbal ability” which allows them to “organize and explain ideas as well as observe and think diagnostically” (Vacca et al., 2021).

Rationale for Addressing Content Area Literacy in the 21st Century One of the keys to addressing the need for content area literacy in the 21st Century is our need to help our students “learn how to learn new technologies” (Vacca et al., 2021). Students have an unprecedented opportunity to access content knowledge through multiple new literacies that require and informed learning approach. For example, students need to know how to navigate on online book which contains video links, hyperlinks to various resources and interactive content. Effective teachers help their students learn to navigate these new resources and they are accessed regularly in and outside of the classroom. When students become effective learners of these new technologies, they are prepared for the ever changing world we live in and able to effectively learn through all the new avenues available.

Comparing and Contrasting the Use of Natural Resources Overview : The activity is designed for my 5th grade Science and Social Studies class. They will first see an example of how to use the different slides in this presentation to do research and fill in a graphic organizer. Each slide contain multimedia links to take students to a variety of articles and videos. Once they have seen modeling on one of the regions, they will use the graphic organizer to complete research on their own region. The activity gives them opportunity to read through historically specific information and make comparisons between different time periods and cultures. It provides them with a guided research opportunity to see how natural resource use has changed over time and helps them articulate the differences that they see through a reading and writing graphic organizer. Standards: SS.G.1.5. Investigate how the cultural and environmental characteristics of places within the United States change over time. CC.5.R.I.3 Key Ideas and Details: Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.

Research Project Instructions Pick a region of the USA to research (one slide). Go through the links on the slide and compare how the use of natural resources has changed over time. Links in the red box are about today and the links in the blue box are about how Native Americans used natural resources. Fill out your graphic organizer based on your research. Have fun learning about Native Americans and natural resources! If you need a reminder about what natural resources are, here is a video to remind you:
