Traditional
sports
•Traditional sports are sports that have been part of a particular
culture or society for a long time, often passed through
generations.
•These are sports with formalized rules and structures.
•They are usually played for fun, celebration, or fitness, rather
than for serious competition.
•Some traditional sports are unique to small communities,
while others are common childhood games played in schoolyards
around the world,(Maryuni& Nasrulloh, (2022)
•Examples of these traditional games: soccer, rugby, crickets etc.
Introduction of soccer
•Soccer also known as football in most parts of the world, is
the most popular and widely played sport globally,
bringing together millions of players and fans across
cultures and continents.
•It is a team sport played between two sides of eleven
players each, with the main objective of scoring goals by
getting the ball into the opponent’s net without using hands
or arms, except by the goalkeeper.
•Soccer is governed by standardized rules, it is the result of
centuries of evolution from ancient ball games to the highly
organized competitions seen today, for example the FIFA
World Cup.
Origins of
soccer
•Soccer has origins that can be traced across many
different regions and cultures throughout history.
•Civilizations such as the Chinese, Japanese, Italians,
Ancient Greeks, Persians, and Vikings, among others,
played some form of ball games long before modern times.
•The Chinese were playing early versions of football over
3000 years ago. In ancient Greece and Rome, similar
games were played to help prepare soldiers for combat. As
time went on, the game spread into Europe, which later
became a central region for the development of modern
soccer,(Murray& Murray,(1998))
•In England, football was once viewed as violent and
immoral. Because of its rough nature, it was banned by
Nicholas de Farndone, who was the Mayor of
Londonatthetime,(Luna, ( 2012))
Rule and regulations of soccer
•Kick-off starts the match, begins the second half, and follows each goal.
•Other restarts: throw-ins, goal kicks, corner kicks, and free kicks.
•Ball is out of playwhen it fully crosses the goal line or touchline, on the ground or in the air.
•Ball is in playat all other times.
•A goal is scored when the whole ball crosses the goal line between the posts and under the
crossbar, provided no rules are broken.
•A player is offside if they are nearer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-
last defender at the momentthe ball is played to them, unless they are in their own half or level
with the defender.
Conti..
•Direct free kick fouls includes kicking, tripping, holding, pushing, jumping at an
opponent, or handling the ball deliberately (except by the goalkeeper in their penalty
area).
•Misconduct may lead to yellow cards (caution) or red cards (sending off).
•Direct free kick can be kicked directly at goal.
•Indirect free kick must touch another player before a shot on goal.
•Penalty kick awarded for fouls in the penalty area, taken from the penalty spot.
•Throw-in: awarded when the ball crosses the touchline; taken by the opponents of the
team that last touched the ball.
•Goal kick: awarded when the ball crosses the goal line (but not a goal) last touched by
the attacking team.
•Corner kick: awarded when the ball crosses the goal line (but not a goal) last touched
by the defending team.
Football field
•The field must be rectangular.
•Standard size for international
matches: Length 100–110 m,
Width 64–75 m.
•Each end has a goal measuring
7.32 m wide and 2.44 m high.
