BAB 1
Introduction
Background of The Research
Racial discrimination has been a pervasive and
enduring issue throughout history, manifesting in
various forms across different societies and cultures.
It refers to the unfair treatment or prejudice against
individuals based on their race or ethnicity, often
resulting in systemic inequalities, stereotypes, and
barriers to opportunities. This form of discrimination
can be overt or covert, ranging from explicit acts of
racism to subtle biases that permeate everyday
interactions and institutions. Through this research,
we hope to foster a greater understanding of the
struggles faced by Asian Americans and contribute to
efforts aimed at promoting inclusivity, diversity, and
social justice in American society.

CHAPTER 2: review of related literature
2.1 REVIEW OF RELATED STUDY
A. Reflection of racial discrimination in literature
In the context of Asian American literature, several studies have focused on the
representation of racial discrimination and stereotypes. Elaine Kim's groundbreaking work,
"Asian American Literature: An Introduction to the Writings and Their Social Context," provides
insights into the portrayal of Asian American characters in literature and their struggles
against racial discrimination. Kim emphasizes the importance of representation and the role of
literature in challenging stereotypes and promoting understanding.

CHAPTER 2: review of related literature
B. Implication of racial discrimination in Asian-Americans lives
Research on the implications of racial discrimination for Asian Americans has highlighted its
multifaceted impact on individuals, communities, and society at large. Studies have shown
that racial discrimination can lead to psychological distress, lower self-esteem, and a sense of
alienation among Asian Americans. Furthermore, discrimination in employment, education,
and healthcare can result in systemic inequalities and barriers to opportunities for
advancement.

CHAPTER 2: review of related literature
C. Broader social context of racial discrimination in America
A seminal study by Devah Pager titled "The Mark of a Criminal Record" examines racial disparities in employment
opportunities and the impact of criminal records on job prospects for African Americans and Latinos. While this
study focuses on these specific groups, its findings are indicative of the systemic nature of racial discrimination in
America and its pervasive impact on individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
2.2 Previous study
Previous studies have explored the reflection of racial discrimination in literature, its implications for Asian
Americans, and its broader social context in America. These studies have laid the groundwork for understanding
the complexities of racial discrimination and its multifaceted impact on individuals and communities. However,
there is a gap in the literature regarding the specific portrayal of racial discrimination in contemporary novels like
"Disorientations" by Elaine Hsieh Chou. This research aims to fill this gap by addressing the research questions
outlined earlier and contributing to a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Asian Americans in the
context of racial discrimination.

The technique of data analysis used in the research
is descriptive and content analysis. The researcher
uses descriptive technique procedures to interpret
and understand the text, and content analysis to
identify and analyze patterns and themes related to
racial discrimination in the novel. The data is analyzed
using postcolonial theory to interpret the text and
context of the novel, and to shed light on the issue of
racial discrimination towards Asiann-Americans in
American society.
