HOW TO STUDY WORDS EFFICIENTLY

STUDY PARTS OF SPEECH What part of speech can the word “LEVEL” be? - water level - level of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere - entry level / advanced level students - the 3 rd level of the building - at the local/global level - a level voice / a level-headed person / level playground - to level mountains / to level the playing field

Practice – Look up in the dictionary for different parts of speech the following words can be. • arm • head • hand

3. Study the etymology of the word Etymology = word origin (where a certain word came from and has evolved over time) - cide : homicide / genocide / pesticide / herbicide Mal- : malpractice / malnutrition / malfunction - spect : inspect / spectator / aspect / respect

Practice – Use your fav search engine to look up for the etymology of the following words Nightmare Disaster Narcissist Upper/lower case

4. Study both denotative and connotative meanings of words Denotative meaning Connotative meaning Exact and direct meaning context-neutral “means” : precise/literal meaning given by the dictionary EG: LOOK EG: LAUGH EG: THIN Implied meaning Context-bound “imply” – evoke associated ideas, images, emotions EG: STARE / PEEK / GLIMPSE / GAZE EG: TITTER / GIGGLE / ROAR / SMIRK /CHUCKLE EG: SKINNY / ELEGANT / SLENDER / SLIM / LANKY / LEAN

PRACTICE – FIND WORDS THAT ARE SIMILAR IN MEANING TO THE WORDS GIVEN IN EACH ROW, BUT CONVEY DIFFERENT SHADES OF FEELING
