How to use concept mapping and mind mapping techniques in the social science classroom for better understanding of contents by the students

Slide Content

Two Days Capacity Building Program June-2024 By- Mr.Harpinder Singh PGT Political Science

What is concept map? “What’s a concept? A concept is ,basically, an idea. “What is a map? It is an image that shows part or the whole of something. Thus a concept map probably shows the image of different parts of an idea.

Who developed this….. Who developed the method of forming concept map in teaching? Thus by all these references, we can conclude that Concept Mapping in Education was introduced by Joseph D. Novak. Of Cornell University (Research University) New York in 1970. H e was Professor of Education and Biological Sciences.

Meaning A concept map is a diagram or graphical tool that visually represents relationships between concepts and ideas. A concept map presents the relationship among a set of connected concepts and ideas. It is a tangible way to display how your mind “sees” a particular topic.

Steps for Constructing Map 1. Brainstorming phase 2. Organizing phase 3. Layout phase 4. Linking phase 5. Finalizing the concept phase

Significance of concept map In the field of education, concept maps are used as both a learning tool and an evaluation tool to assess students learning. 1. It helps students organize new information. 2. It helps students to make meaningful connection between the main idea and other information.

3. They’re easy to construct and can be used within any content area. 4. Present complex concepts in an easily digestive way. 5. Help promote creative and critical thinking among students. 7.Encourage brainstorming and high level thinking. 8.Snapshots student’s current knowledge to assess understanding

Theory of Learning Constructivist theory- Knowledge is human construction and evolves over time Our brain process knowledge through three different memory systems. 1. Short Term Memory 2. Working Memory 3. Long Term Memory

How concept maps are used in Social Science Classroom Concept maps also make it easier to identify key concepts that teachers or students need to focus on for a particular topic. They can also act as a visual road map of relationships between concepts. Concept maps can act as a graphical overview of what students have learned.

Rote learning to meaningful learning

What they include…… Concept enclosed in circles or boxes Or Connecting lines indicating the relationships between the concepts Connecting concepts are called” Linking words” which denote the relationship between the two concepts.

Concept Maps are not . . . Mind maps e xpands an idea but does not show relationship

Anthony Peter Buzan 2 June 1942 - 13 April 2019 (aged 76) Palmers Green ,  Middlesex , United Kingdom Tony Buzan , the father of Mind Mapping Mind Map were developed in the late 60s by Tony Buzan as a way of helping students make notes that used only key words and images.

Buzan popularized the idea of Mental literacy, R adiant thinking, and a Technique called  mind mapping , inspired by techniques used by  Leonardo da Vinci ,  Albert Einstein , and  Joseph D. Novak 's “concept mapping " techniques.

Leonardo Da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519) was an Italian  polymath  of the  High Renaissance  who was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. While his fame initially rested on his achievements as a painter, Albert Einstein 14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born  theoretical physicist  who is widely held to be one of the greatest and most influential scientists of all time. Best known for developing the  theory of relativity , Joseph Donald Novak  (December 2, 1930 – September 22, 2023) was an American educator, and professor emeritus at the  Cornell University , and senior research scientist at the  Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition . He is known for his development of  concept mapping  in the 1970s.

Concept Maps are not . . . Organizational Charts- An organizational chart is a visual representation of the hierarchical structure of an organization, showing the different job titles, roles, and reporting relationships within the company. It typically uses boxes and lines to show who reports to whom and how different departments or teams fit together.

Organizational Chart-

Organizational Chart-

Concept Maps are not . . . Flowchart….. A flowchart is a diagram that illustrates the steps, sequences, and decisions of a process or workflow. While there are many different types of flowcharts, a basic flowchart is the simplest form of a process map.

Concept Map Activity- Chapter-1 Power Sharing Enumerate the need for power sharing in democracy. Analyse the Challenges faced by countries like Belgium and Sri Lanka ensuring effective power sharing. Compare and contrast the power sharing of India with Sri Lanka and Belgium. Summarize the purpose of power sharing in preserving the unity and stability of a country

Samples of Pie Chart, Bar Graph, Line Graph and Pictograph

Pie Chart A pie chart is a type of graph representing data in a circular form, with each slice of the circle representing a fraction or proportionate part of the whole. All slices of the pie add up to make the whole equaling 100 percent and 360 degrees.

Bar Graph A bar graph is a graphical representation of information. It uses bars that extend to different heights to depict value.

Line Graph A line graph—also known as a line plot or a line chart—is a graph that uses lines to connect individual data points. A line graph displays quantitative values over a specified time interval. In finance, line graphs are commonly used to depict the historical price action of an asset or security.

Pictorial Graph- A picture graph is a pictorial display of data with symbols, icons, and pictures to represent different quantities. The symbols, icons, and pictures of a picture graph typically represent concepts or ideas, or stand in for a larger quantity of something.
