INTRODUCTION The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, the apex body in India for the formulation, co-ordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world. 3
Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) Set up in 1911 Was re-designated in 1949 as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). HISTORY 4
ICMR promotes biomedical research in the country through intramural research (through its own Institutes/ Centres ) and extramural research (through grants-in-aid given to projects in non- ICMR Institutes). ICMR’s 26 National Institutes address themselves to research on specific health topics like Tuberculosis Leprosy C holera and diarrheal diseases 5 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
6 Viral diseases including AIDS Malaria Kala- azar Vector control Nutrition Food & drug toxicology Reproduction Immuno-haematology Oncology, Medical statistics etc .
Contd … Its 6 Regional Medical Research Centers address themselves to regional health problems. and also aim to strengthen or generate research capabilities in different geographic areas of the country. 7
ICMR promotes extramural research through Setting up Centers for Advanced Research in different research areas around existing expertise and infrastructure in selected departments of Medical Colleges, Universities and other non-ICMR Research Institutes; Task force studies which emphasis a time-bound, goal-oriented approach with clearly defined targets, specific time frames, standardized and uniform methodologies, and often a multi-centric structure; FUNCTION 8
Contd …. (iii) Open-ended research on the basis of applications for grants-in-aid received from scientists in non-ICMR Research Institutes located in different parts of the country. 9
Human resource development in biomedical research is encouraged by ICMR through various schemes such as Research Fellowships i.e. Junior & Senior Fellowships and Research Associate ships; Short-term Visiting Fellowships (which allow scientists to learn advanced research techniques from other well-established research Institutes in India); Contd …. 10
Contd … ( iii)Short-term Research Studentships (for undergraduate medical students to encourage them to familiarize themselves with research methodologies and techniques; and (IV)Various Training Program and Workshops conducted by ICMR. The ICMR also offers the position of Emeritus Medical Scientist to retired scientists/teachers to enable them to continue or take up research on specific biomedical topics. 11
DIVISIONS AND UNITS UNDER ICMR 12

IPR Unit provides technical, legal & all other support on IPR-related issues in respect of all ICMR supported research (intramural/extramural) The technologies of ICMR are showcased through various means like publication “Technologies for Commercialization” as also at various Seminars , Industry meets etc. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS (IPR) UNIT 19
20 The technologies generated by the ICMR are also commercialized through the National Research Development Corporation, New Delhi and the Biotechnology Consortium India Ltd., New Delhi. The Unit is a recognized Centre for internship program for Women Scientists of the Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) of the Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi.
The unit is engaged in bringing out series of publications/monographs in the area of medicinal plants. Quality Standards of Indian Medicinal Plants; Phytochemical Reference Standards of Selected Indian Medicinal Plants and Monographs on Diseases of Public Health Importance. Other initiatives include development of marker phyto -constituents and establishing the identity of selected controversial Ayurvedic plant drugs. MEDICINAL PLANT UNIT 21
The objective is to Create an awareness among new researchers, especially those belonging to state medical colleges and other academic institutions located in the periphery of different states, about the different research methodologies being used by researchers in different fields of medical science; Enable them to develop the skills to be able to choose the right research methodology; RESEARCH METHODOLOGY CELL 22
Help them in the formulation of specific research proposals in their chosen field of interest; Process for funding by the Council of research proposals selected through this process. The proposals mentioned above are developed as an outcome of workshops organized from time to time in different parts of the country. Contd … 23
