IDENTIFICATION OF SEEDS OF IMPORTANT TREE SPECIES Exercise No. 4
1. Acacia nilotica : C o m p ressed and oval t o elliptic, black to greenish brown, 4 - 12 mm long. All spec i es h ave the faces marked by an oval or elliptic line m o re or less concentric with the outline of the seed. Endospe r m lack i ng.
2. Prosopis juliflora : Co m p ressed and ova l , ovate or ell i ptic, 2.5 - 7 mm long brown, g l oss y , with a central ring on each fa c e. Cro s s s ections show the y ellowish e m br y o sa n dwitched between 2 hard glassy l a y e rs of endospe r m .
3. Cassia siam ea : Diverse externally and internall y , medi u m to large, co m pre ssed oval, flattish circular, flattish – spatulate or rho m boid. All species have faced marked by an elliptic to circular zone or r ing.
4. Sesbania grandiflora : O b long-ell i pso i d and sligh tl y co m p ressed 4 × 2.5 × 2 mm, blackish, m o ttling o n gr a y or brown.
5. Hardwickia binata : The s eed is ex- al b u m inous , flat, 2 cm × 1 cm sub- renifor m , pointed at one end a n d rou n ded at t h e other, with a fairly hard testa .
6. Cassia fistula: The seeds are 1 cm × 0.75 c m , ovate, c o m p re s sed light brown, hard, s m ooth, shi n y with a m oderately hard t esta and albumen.
7. Bauhinia purpurea : The s eeds a r e 1.5 c m × 1.5 c m , nearly circular flat, brown with a s o m ewhat coriaceous testa .
8. Albizzia lebbeck : The seeds are 0.75 – 1.0 cm × 0.5 – . 75 c m , obovate or ob l on g , c o m p ressed, light b r own, s m ooth with a hard testa .
9. Syzygium c u mini : Seeds are oblong ovoid 1-2 cm long, 2-5 angular and irregular l y shaped, seeds are c o m p re s sed together into a m a s s r es e m b ling a single seed, th e whole enclosed in a sub- coriace o us covering.
10. Diospyros melonoxylon ( Beedi seed) The seeds a r e oblong, co m pr es s ed 1.25-2.0 cm long, brown, shining with a wrinkled testa and ru m i n ate alb u m en.
11. Tectona grandis (Teak): Fruit is a hard, bo n y , irregu l arly g l obose nut so m e what pointed at the apex, enclosed in a t h ick, li g ht b r own covering, usual l y 1 - 1 . 5 cm in diameter, but var y ing m u ch in size, containing 1-3 rarely 4 seeds.
12. Bombax ceiba : The seeds are 0.4 to 0.6 cm long, irregular l y obvo i d , dark b r own, s m ooth with a brittle testa .
13. Ailanthus excelsa : The f r uit is a red o n e-seeded samar a , 5-8 cm long by 1-1.5 cm wide pro m inently veined, acute at both ends a nd twisted at the base.
14. Sapindus emarginatus ( Soapnut ): The seeds a r e smooth, black, nearly globose , about 1 cm long, ve r y hard.
15. Butea mono sp erma : The seed is flat, r eniform 3-4 c m × 2 - 2.5 c m with a thin papery reddish bro w n testa .
16. Dalbergia sissoo ( Sissoo ): The seeds are 0.5-0.75 cm × 0.2 - 0.25 cm renifor m , flat light brown, with a delicate papery testa .
17. Santalum album (Sandalwood): The fruit is a purplish black gl o bose succulent drupe 1-1.5 cm in di a meter, with a brown endocarp which is m ode r ately hard but brittle and easily broken. The fruit stones are globose 0.50 – 0. 7 5 cm in dia m eter. The seed has copious white albumen .
18. Emblica officinalis ( Aonla ): The fruit contains 4-6 dark brown s m ooth seeds that can be extracted by placing the ripe fruits in the sun until the hard putamen dehisces and the seeds e scape.
19. Dendrocalamus strictus (Bamboo): Seeds grain like, characterist i c of gra m in a e f a m il y .
