IFLA ARL Hot Topics 2024: Current & Future Literacies: Libraries Leading Literacy Development
This webinar features three global speakers on the topic of "Current & Future Literacies: Libraries Leading Literacy Development in an Age of Global Transitions" on topics of AI in LIS Education; Digital Preservation and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in a Post-COVID-19 World ; and Advancing Literacy in the Digital Age.
Presentation 3: Advancing Literacy in the Digital Age: The Role of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Library in Global Transitions by Lily Y. Ko. Head, Research & Learning Support, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Library has made it their mission to foster digital literacy among students, recognizing its importance in a rapidly changing world.
To achieve this goal, the Library established the Digital Scholarship service in 2017. One focus is enhancing students’ awareness and skills on data cycle. In 2020, the Library built a MakerSpace, providing 3D printing, 3D scanning, VR/AR, and video creation and editing services. The Library has also led the CUHK Data Hack for three years, co-organized with other academic departments. It initiated a research data service in 2020 to advocate for a culture change on campus to share and re-use research data.
The Library collaborates with various departments to foster global citizenship among students. For example, it partnered with the Independent Learning Centre to develop online materials on global citizenship. The Library has also collaborated with other academic departments to organize events, such as postgraduate research poster exhibition, to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and enhance research skills among students.
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology emerges, the Library has developed the Guidelines and Best Practices for Using AI Tools for research, teaching and learning. The Library also advocates for a larger role in enhancing students’ research ethics and academic integrity by participating in the University’s Committees, and conducting new workshops on AI literacy. This demonstrates the Library’s commitment to leading literacy development in a time of global change.
