Illiteracy is a big problem because the illiterate people are unable to understand the new techniques of social life. They do not understand the new policies. Every individual has right to get education in better institutions. Illiteracy minimizes the social relations in the society which leads to less development of resources. Illiterate person is unable to read books, magazine, articles, and other reading materials.
The society does not develop, if there is a number of a person un-educated. Illiteracy is a barrier in the social progress among people for betterment of the society.

Introduction: Illiteracy is the quality or condition of being unable to read or write. The state or quality of being illiterate; lack of education or culture; esp., an inability to read or write. Inability to understand all forms of communication .
Overview: Illiteracy is a big problem because the illiterate people are unable to understand the new techniques of social life. They do not understand the new policies. Every individual has right to get education in better institutions. Illiteracy minimizes the social relations in the society which leads to less development of resources. Nowadays, many countries are suffering from illiteracy, Pakistan is from one of those countries. Literacy Ratio : the over all literacy ratio is 58% in Pakistan its mean that 42% people are still illiterate in Pakistan. Female literacy ratio in Pakistan is 26 %. Education System is based on Unequal Lines.

Illiteracy among parents: Many illiterate parents do not put much emphasis on the importance of education. Several of those born to parents who can neither read nor write end up being illiterate. Unemployment of the educated: Without the promise of employment, education is not a necessity to them. In a country where many of the educated are unemployed, there may not be enough motivation for the illiterate to go to school. Lack of awareness : In places where several members of the local population do not understand why it is important for them to go to school, the level of illiteracy may be high. Social barriers : Many social barriers such as restrictions on girls’ education in some societies lead to illiteracy among the affected segment of the population. Education of the girl child has been an issue in some parts of the world leading to the formation of different organizations focused on championing the education of women.
Lack of affordable education facilities: Those who live in very remote areas with few or no education facilities may remain illiterate. The nearest school might be found several miles away. Poverty: Poor parents with low incomes find it difficult to pay school fees. They are forced to choose between providing basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing and taking their children to school. Girls mostly drop out of school to help with work: Major factors that hinder enrolment rates of girls include poverty, cultural constraints, illiteracy of parents and parental concerns about safety and mobility of their daughters. Agrarian Society: Most of the people (about 68%) live in rural areas of Pakistan and majority of them are attached with different fields of agriculture. Some are cultivators and some are helpers to the cultivators.
EFFECTS OF ILLITERACY Illiteracy rates increase drug and alcohol abuse in society. Illiteracy decreases the rate of technological advancement in society. Illiterate people may not vote. increased illiteracy rates have the ability to diminish society. Illiteracy links to poor health. Illiteracy contributes to high unemployment rates in a society . The difficulty understanding societal issues lowers the level of community involvement and civic participation.
Consequences of illiteracy: Child marriage: This is also a problem that may come about due to illiteracy. Parents may fail to recognize the benefits of taking children to school to learn how to read and write. Difficult life: An illiterate person can lead a difficult life in so many ways. The inability to find gainful employment can subject one to a life of poverty with poor living conditions. There can be a lack of basic necessities such as good shelter, clothing and decent meals . Low: self Esteem : Low self-esteem, which can lead to isolation. Social crimes: Through education, a person can cultivate some civic sense and develop behavior patterns that are socially acceptable. Illiterate people may engage in unlawful acts in the society due to lack of employment or simply as a result of being uncultured. Underemployment, Unemployment: We live in a world where the job market favors people who are properly educated with useful skills to drive company growth.
Conclusion/Solutions: Budget for education should be increased. Schools should be provided in every village of Pakistan. Government should take steps to create job opportunities for the educated people . Government should also take steps to establish schools and colleges in villages. Available schools should be utilized for education only. Education should be less costly for all up to University. Education should be compulsory for all up to 12th Standard . Salaries of teachers should be increased so that people can join this profession easily.
