Importance of
sterilization
Presented to :DR Rahat
Presented by : Eman Shahid
Subject : clinical microbiology

What is sterilization..?
❑It is the process of killing all micro-organisms ( bacterial , viral and fungal )
with the use of either physical or chemical agents
❑Sterilization is distinct from disinfection ,sanitization and pasteurization, in
that those methods reduce rather than eliminate all form of life and
biological agents present . After sterilization , an object is referredto as
beingsterile and aseptic

What to sterilize...?
❑All instruments that penetrate in bones and soft tissues
❑Instruments that are not intended to penetrate the tissues ,but that may
come into contact with oral tissue
❑If the sterilization procedure may damage the instrument then sterilization
canbe replaced by disinfection procedure

Methods of sterilization
❑Steam
❑Chemicals ( gas )
❑Plasma
❑Ionization radiation
❑Cold chemicals

Importance of sterilization
❑To prevent contamination in sterile products
❑To prevent transmission of pathogens and micro-organism which are responsible
for causing disease in plants , animals and human beings
❑To prevent decomposition and spoiling of food and food products
❑To prevent contamination of unwanted microbes in pure cultures and
othermicrobiology experiments performed for research studies
❑To prevent contamination is aseptic areas or instruments which are used for
preparation of sterile dosage forms and sterility testing

Importance of sterilizing medical
equipments
A surgical instrument or medical device that comes in contact with a
patient's mucous membranes or sterile tissue and carries a significant risk of
introducing pathogenic microbes, potentially resulting in infection. Lack of
proper sterilization and disinfection of medical equipment increases the risk
of infection due to the breach of host barriers. Eliminating blood, mucous,
saliva, pus and foreign particles, or dirt that is left behind which could lead
to dangerous complications for the next patient requiring surgery on whom
the medical practitioner uses the instrument.

Benefits of sterilizing medical
equipments
1. Decreasing pathogenic load --the number of non-sterilized bacteria
living on a surface.
2. Preventing the corrosion of expensive and highly precise tools that have
intricate functional pieces
3. Removing the breeding ground for the surviving germs.
4. Ensures the safe transport of equipment which needs to be packed and
assembled for sterilization or disinfection.
5. With proper Sterilization and disinfection, safe use of non-invasive and
invasive medical devices can be ensured.

Summary
sterilization is vital for maintaining a high level of hygiene and safety,
particularly in healthcare settings where the risk of infection is significant. It
ensures that medical and surgical instruments do not transmit infectious
pathogens to patients.
