UNIT : WINGS AND WHEELS SUB-UNIT :FROM A RAILWAY CARRIAGE (POEM) STANDARD : 8 THEME : TRAVEL

AIM: To make the learners understand the importance of travelling and also to make aware of the importance of adventurous travelling. LEARNING OUTCOME The learner develops reading skills with proper stress and tone. understands poetic devices like images, rhyming words rhyme scheme, alliteration etc.  familiarizes various literary forms like novel, story and poems Then teacher shows some pictures…..

TESTING - What did you understand after seeing these pictures? From the pictures we can arrive at the conclusion that the poem is related to travelling. Then the teacher asks the questions like…. Q: How do you usually spent your holidays? Q: How many of you like to travel? Q: What are the different types of transportation modes used for travelling?

Then the teacher shows another picture …. Identify the picture

The famous poet shown in the picture is R obert Louis S tevenson after that the teacher shows the profile of the poet. PROFILE ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON Birth -1850 Scottish novelist, poet, essayist. Travel writer. Famous work- Treasure island.

Can you guess the name of the poem….. The clue is….. Then the teacher writes the name of the poem- FROM A RAILWAY CARRIAGE

THEME : The poem is about a thrilling experience of the poet during a train journey in the 19 th century. During the journey the poet saw many sights… Then the teacher reads the poem…. Teacher now describes the poem through the pictures…. The poet saw….. Hills and plains meadows cattle

From these pictures we can conclude that the train is moving through a village.. FINDING OUT THE DIFFICULT WORDS Teacher asks the students to mark the difficult words and to find out from the dictionary… 1.Charge- to rush forward ( teacher gives situation that terrorist charge on neighbouring countries ) 2Bramble –a prickly shrub of rose family 3.Ditches – a long narrow furrow   4Scrample – to move quickly( teacher creates situation that when we are late for school we walk quickly)

APPRECIATION Finding out the rhyming words Cattle - battle Plain - rain Road - load Scramble - bramble

ACTIVITY FINDING OUT THE ALLITERATION Teacher shows a chart in which it is given what alliteration is … Now find the alliteration from the poem…. ALLITERATION It is the stylistic device in which a number of words having the same consonant sound occur close together in a series. Example: A big bully beats a baby boy.

ALLITERATION IN THE POEM Faster than fairies ,faster than witches. Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches.

ASSIGNMENT Write a poem on “Nature ”.
