Introduction My Health Science Internship took place at Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU ICAR). I completed roughly 180 hours working with a research team collecting baseline data for future driving studies. I was able to interact with individuals from various cultures and backgrounds who had differing areas of study. The major area of focus while at CU ICAR was research. I was able to understand more about the process of research and its importance. Throughout this PowerPoint is the more detailed information about where my internship took place and what my roles and responsibilities were while at CU ICAR.
What started as a simple idea turned into a catalyst for global automotive engineering Vision Be the premier automotive research, innovation, and educational enterprise in the world Mission Be a high seminary of learning, in the field of automotive engineering; lead translational research, with emphasis on industry relevance, and support with excellence in basic research; contribute to high value job creation in South Carolina; lead global thinking on the sustainable development of the automotive sector

Carroll A. Campbell Jr. Graduate Engineering Center Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU ICAR) is a research campus located in Greenville, South Carolina. The area that the research facility is composed of five technology neighborhoods. The building the internship took place was addressed as 4 Research Drive in one of the five the technology neighborhoods. This site consists of numerous research buildings to develop innovative technology in the world of automotive industry.
Department of Interest The department of interest was research at CU ICAR. This research was done in the simulation lab and is partnered with DriveSafety , Inc. A variety of research takes place in this department and is most associated with driving safety techniques and health. A great deal of data is collected and many papers published by this department. Because this department includes individuals with varying jobs and areas of interest, a dynamic team-based approach to many of the projects provides a cohesive end result.
Research Team Dr. Johnell Brooks Research Team Leader Casey Jenkins Research Assistant Michael Anderson Research Assistant While at Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU ICAR), I interacted with numerous individuals with varying backgrounds and areas of interest. However, I worked closest with Dr. Johnell Brooks, Casey Jenkins, and Michael Anderson. All three individuals would give me assignments to work on, as well as us work together cohesively on certain projects.
Internship Goals and Objectives Health Assessment Goal By the end of my fieldwork experience, I will be able to run participants through the driving simulator as well as complete the data collection sheets and upload the data to the hard drive. Each participant will have a number and will not be connected with their name. Objectives. I will accomplish this by : Reading consent and background forms. Performing the tasks in the driving simulation as a participant. Practice running the driving simulator with a co-worker. Reading the prompts for the simulator to the participant. Fill out data collection sheets and make sure consent and background forms completed by participant. Lock up forms and data collection sheets in file cabinet. Move data from simulator to hard drive with the rest of the data collection to be evaluated at a later date. Discuss how the data collection went with my preceptor or supervisor and discuss concerns or suggestions .
Internship Goals and Objectives Continued Health Planning Goal By the end of my fieldwork experience, I will be able to help plan who will run scheduled participants in the driving simulator. Objectives. I will accomplish this by : Discussing schedules of individuals who will be running the simulator and decide what times are best for them. Find out what times work best for participants to meet for an extended period of time to complete driving simulation scenarios. Use schedules for both participants and those who will run the simulator to determine the appointment times for the participants. Work with supervisor or preceptor to make sure appointments are set and simulator works .
Internship Goals and Objectives Continued Health Development/Implementation Goal By the end of my fieldwork experience, I will be able to implement my literature review into the article about defensive driving courses and their effects on accidents. This literature review can also help to tailor the Guard Your Life Program. Objectives. I will accomplish this by : Discuss what ideas and studies my preceptor is looking for. Consult with a librarian on what types of buzzwords to type into a search engine. Research the recommended buzzwords and other ideas related to defensive driving courses and the Guard Your Life Program. Combine all the research found relating to the Guard Your Life Program and discuss the results with the preceptor.
Internship Goals and Objectives Continued Health Evaluation Goal By the end of my fieldwork experience, I will be able to evaluate and discuss the research study and results with others outside of the research team. This can include graduate schools, other researchers, or similar research programs. Objectives. I will accomplish this by : Talk with the preceptor about the research study and discuss the ideas to be understood from the results. Looking at the data results from the driving simulations and understand what the implications are. Draw up a diagram or write notes about what I got from the study and those implications. Combine my ideas and the ideas of the preceptor that the research study provided to help understand what the entire research project entailed and explained
Internship Goals and Objectives Continued Affective Goal By the end of my fieldwork experience, I will be able to articulate how I feel about pursuing a career or further graduate studies in research related to defensive driving courses and the use of driving simulators to reduce accidents. Objectives. I will accomplish this by : Interviewing my preceptor along with additional staff that works with the driving simulator or helps to organize the Guard Your Life Program. Discuss the goals or mission of research at the site I am interning with my preceptor. Observing data collection and other research studies performed at the site. Look into other avenues of research similar to those I have been working on during my internship. Reviewing the desired qualifications and job descriptions of the program. Discuss my qualifications and skills in relation to those of the site in which I am interning. Compile all of the information and reflections about this type of work into summary format to express my feelings about pursuing a career in the area of research .
Responsibilities My responsibilities while at CU ICAR varied based on need. Because there was always something different going on spanning the entire semester, my roles and duties would change and I would need to be flexible with my schedule as well. These responsibilities include: Collecting consent and background surveys from participants Running participants through the driving simulators and completing the data collection forms for each participant This included participants at CU ICAR and Christ Church Episcopal School (CCES) Obtaining data from simulator and putting into Excel spreadsheets Calculating average, standard deviation, maximum, and minimum for all scenario results Made graphs based off of results Operating driving simulator Completing data collection form for participant
Responsibilities Continued I was also responsible for tasks outside of data collection. These duties include: Collect forms and consent from Christ Church Episcopal School for participants to be scheduled for simulations Researching past studies on defensive driving courses in teens Writing a literature review relating to the Guard Your Life Challenge program Attend meetings associated with the research being conducted during my internship This included Dr. Lucas, for which a concussion study would be conducted This also included the family that started the Guard Your Life Challenge program Attend the Guard Your Life Challenge courses on Sunday, April 10 th to hand out and collect surveys from the participants
Internship Projects The main project I had while at CU ICAR was writing a literature review for the Guard Your Life Challenge study. I researched past literature on defensive driving courses for teens and its role in reducing motor vehicle accidents. I corresponded with a librarian for more specific information, as well as kept my research team updated on the progress of the paper. Another project was data collection . I did the majority of driving simulations and filled out all corresponding forms for participants that completed the simulations. The data collected from the simulations was put into Excel spreadsheets and I calculated results for all scenarios. I also put these data results into graphs to show how the participants performed.
Conclusion During my semester as an intern at CU ICAR, I was able to learn valuable information about research techniques, data collection, and driving simulators. While at CU ICAR, I was also able to interact with a wide variety of individuals and become more open to different experiences. Before my internship, I was not extremel y interested in conducting research. However, I have now earned a newfound appreciation for it and could see myself conducting my own research in my future career. Overall, I enjoyed my experience as an intern and it truly helped me to take what I learned in undergraduate coursework and apply it in my internship. This opportunity also aided in my development as a professional and will continue to act as a guide for future career opportunities. I would highly recommend a research internship, especially at CU ICAR. The people I worked alongside were truly phenomenal in my development as a health professional and researcher.
