INTRAMOLECULAR BONDS BY PERPETUAL APPIAH MPHIL(SCIENCE EDUCATION) UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE

INTRODUCTION Living things are made of atoms but in most cases those atoms are not just floating around individually. Instead they are usually interacting with other atoms. How do atoms interact with each other?

Review of relevant previous knowledge of students Using oral questioning answer the following questions; what is an atom? what is a molecule? explain ionization energy in your own words?

LESSON OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, students will be able to; explain chemical bond and state the types describe how ionic bond is formed using ball and stick model Interpret and analyze ionic bond in various chemical bonds state and explain physical properties of ionic bond

Demonstration of chemical bond using ball and stick model Ball and stick model is a model that is used to show position of atoms and the bonds formed between them in 3-dimension. These balls have different colors that show the types of elements present in the bond

Chemical bonding Bond is something that fastens or holds things together. A bond can be a relationship between individuals example sisters. Chemical bond holds molecules together and creates temporary connections that are essential in life. Chemical bond is formed to achieve a more stable outer electronic configuration.

Types of chemical bond The two main types of chemical bonds are; interatomic or intramolecular bond: it is a force that holds atoms together in molecule. Also known a primary bond. Ionic bond, metallic bond and covalent bond are types of interatomic bond. click to read more

Types of chemical bond 2. intermolecular bond: it is a force that holds molecules together. It is also known as secondary bond. They include electrovalent bond, covalent bond, hydrogen bond and Van der Waal’s forces. click to read more

Students activity Using a five minute test explain in your words three key terms that was mentioned during the demonstration and explanation of chemical bond.

Intramolecular bonds ( i ) ionic bonds Let us watch a video on the nature and formation of ionic bond

Physical properties of ionic bond They are crystalline solids at room temperature They are soluble in polar solvents such as water but insoluble in non polar solvents Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points due to the strong intermolecular electrostatic forces

Students activity In a group of five students answer the following questions on a stick note What is ionic bonds? How is ionic bond formed between chemical species? Give 8 examples of ionic compounds in their chemical formula and analyze the formation of ionic bond in each compound. State two properties of ionic bonds and explain why?

Checking for understanding Each group’s stick note is pasted on the board for whole class discussion facilitated by teacher.

review Chemical bond holds molecules together and creates temporary connections that are essential in life. The types of chemical bonds are; interatomic or intramolecular bond Intermolecular bond

review Ionic bond; it is an electrostatic force of attraction between positively charged ion and negatively charged ion. Example, NaCl(Na+ Cl-) They are crystalline solids at room temperature
