HISTORICAL FOUNDATION OF CURRICULUM These refer to those influences on the curriculum that are derived from developments in the past. They form the basis for decision making and systematic growth of the education system.

The historical development shows the different changes in the purposes, principles, and content of the curriculum. The different changes are influenced by educational philosophy, psychology, and different pedagogical theories.

HISTORICAL PERIODS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CURRICULUM

ANCIENT GREECE AND ROME Philosophical Foundations: Plato and Aristotle's philosophies laid the groundwork for Western education. Plato emphasized the importance of reason, knowledge, and virtue, while Aristotle focused on logic, observation, and empirical inquiry. Curriculum Focus: Education in ancient Greece primarily focused on the liberal arts, including grammar, rhetoric, logic, mathematics, astronomy, and music.

Medieval Europe (5th to 15th centuries) Religious Education: Education was largely controlled by the Church and focused on religious instruction, preparing individuals for religious vocations.
