Getting started Your student card Your PIN Single Sign On Your email Library Web pages

To get started you need… your student card to: Enter the Libraries and Learning Zones Photocopy, print and scan Borrow books Carry your student card with you at all times when on campus. your PIN to: Use the Self Issue machines in Kimberlin and the Law Library A n email will be sent to your DMU email address asking you to set your PIN. You can also reset your PIN here .

Your Single Sign On Use your SSO to access myDMU , Blackboard and your DMU email as well as most online library resources. Your initial password is your date of birth dd /mm/ yy . Change it at the earliest opportunity Your student number e.g. p2412345 Your date of birth in the format: d d /mm/ yy

Your DMU email Your DMU email is your student number @my365.dmu.ac.uk e.g. [email protected] Make sure you check your DMU email regularly as this is how the library and faculty will contact you

The library web pages Your starting point to the Library services and resources is the library web page. Just google DMU Library to find it. http://library.dmu.ac.uk From the Library home page you can: - Search Library Search to find books, e-books, journal articles and more (also available from your subject guide) - Access your subject guide - Access the CLaSS guide - Access Blackboard , your DMU email ……. Facilities The libraries and learning zones Study Spaces Borrowing IT & Printing

The libraries and learning zones There are 2 libraries (Kimberlin and the Law Library) and 2 learning zones on Campus. The Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year . Check the Library web pages for staffed hours and the opening hours of the Law Library, Greenhouse and Eric Wood Buildings. Kimberlin The Law Library (HU 1.81) The greenhouse Eric Wood Learning Zone

Study spaces Syndicate rooms & Individual study rooms Book a syndicate room or individual study room online . Group study Want to study together? Stay in the Learning Zone on the Ground Floor Silent study rooms Need complete silence to study? Use the silent study rooms on the 2 nd Floor There are many type of study spaces in the Libraries to suit your needs.

Borrowing and returning Use the self issue machine to issue your books. Books can be returned through the self returns slots in Kimberlin Simply scan your student card, key in your PIN and place the books on the tray. Don’t forget your receipt!

Borrowing 24 up to 2 WEEKS Renew & Reserve Normal loan books can be borrowed for up to 2 weeks . However all books are subject to recall. You can borrow up to 24 books . You can also borrow 4 DVDs and 2 Short Loan items Books will be automatically renewed , unless recalled, up to 99 times You can reserve items who have been borrowed

Multi Function Devices You can print , scan and photocopy from the Multi Function Devices (MFDs). More information including cost is available here Manage your print account here Computers There are over 8 00 PCs in the DMU libraries and learning zones. You can also borrow laptops from Kimberlin for 2 hours at a time and can use them anywhere on campus. IT and printing

Services for Distance Learners Photocopying service You can request copies of journal articles or book chapters  which the Library only has in paper copy.  A copy of the Photocopy Request Form   can be found here .  See the guide for more information and prices. Postal loans We can send items from the DMU Library book stock to your home address in the UK. A copy of the Postal Loan Request Form can be found here . SCONUL Access Use other libraries with SCONUL Access and access the Wifi on your mobile device with Eduroam at DMU and other universities Apply online from the SCONUL Access website A ccess DMU and other university Wifi network through Eduroam

Inter Library Loans You can request materials through the Inter Library Loan service if what you need is not available at DMU in print or online Apply online using the ILL request form

Library and learning guides Our online guides are available on all aspect of research and study These include subject guides, the disability support guide, distance learning guide, CLaSS guide and many more….

CLaSS (Centre for Learning and Study Support ) Use the CLaSS online guide to find study guides and to book tutorials and workshops CLaSS offers a range of provision aimed at enhancing your academic practice , writing development and professional skills . They offer workshops , online guidance and tutorials ( E tutorials for Distance learners)

The subject guide is your starting point for finding resources. From the Library web pages , select ‘Subject Guides’, then ‘Business & Law’. The Law subject guide http://libguides.library.dmu.ac.uk/law Bookmark the guide on the browser of your home device

DMU resource lists Select the DMU Resource Lists icon to find your modules’ resource lists. Note that a module’s resource list should also be available from the relevant module shell on Blackboard. DMU Resource Lists is an online reading list system which provides easy access to the resources recommended by your tutor. If an item is available online it will provide a direct link to it and if it is available in hard copy it will link to the holdings in the library catalogue.

Books and ebooks Use the Books tab of the Law subject guide to find books and ebooks . The main shelfmarks for British Law Search for books and ebooks .

Books are also available on Westlaw UK and Lexis Library You can also select the Books & e-Books tab of the guide to find out the main shelfmarks for UK law and for a link to ‘ Suggest a purchase ’ if you would like the library to purchase a particular book.

Legal definitions If you need a legal definition you can search a number of legal dictionaries from Westlaw UK. Select ‘Index of Legal terms’ on W estlaw UK home page to search legal dictionaries

Journals Journal articles are useful for current information as journals are published quicker than books. They are a good way to find discussions on legal issues, and to get different view points from different authors

Use the Journal articles tab of the Law subject guide to find journal articles on a topic and to check whether a journal is available online . Journals Westlaw UK and Library Search are your first port of call to find journal articles on legal topics. Use the e-Resource Portal to find out if a specific journal is available online.

Case Law Select the Cases tab of the Law Subject guide for guidance on how to understand and find case law.

Finding Cases You can find full text of case reports and case analysis from legal databases. The databases from which you can find cases. A video to show you how to search and understand your results

Westlaw UK - Cases Westlaw UK is a good starting point for finding specific cases or cases on a topic. Select the Cases heading on Westlaw UK. Select the Cases heading on Use ‘Advanced search’ for more search options such as finding cases referring to specific legislation

Legal abbreviations Google Cardiff legal to find the Cardiff index to Legal Abbreviations . www.legalabbrevs.cardiff.ac.uk

Legislation Select the ‘ Legislation ’ tab of the Law Subject guide for links and guidance on how to find legislation. includes Statutes (or Acts of Parliament ) and Statutory Instruments (can be Rules, Regulations, Orders….)

Finding Legislation Select the Legislation tab of the Law Subject guide for links and guidance on how to find legislation. Use either Westlaw or Lexis

Current v historical Beware Googling legislation as you may not find the most current version of legislation! Warning that the Act may not be up to date on legislation.gov.uk

EU materials Depending on the type of EU materials you are looking for, select the Cases or Legislation tab of the Law Subject guide for links and guidance. In Westlaw UK: - select the EU heading On Lexis: - select ‘ International Legislation ’ under the ‘legislation’ heading (or ‘ International Cases ’ under the ‘Cases’ heading)

Select the News and broadcast media tab of the subject guide. Newspapers UK Newspapers from 1986 onwards are available on LexisLibrary Tutorial to help you use Lexis to find newspapers

Current awareness Select the ‘ News & broadcast media’ tab of the subject guide. Find guidance on how to set up alerts on Westlaw UK and LexisLibrary

Legal databases All the legal databases DMU subscribes to (including specialist and practitioner databases ) are listed under the Databases tab . You can search most databases in one go by searching Library Search . If you want to check the range of databases the library subscribes to in all subjects, check this list of databases
