ENG 214 INTRODUCTION TO SYNTAX AND SENTENCE MEANING
Introduction ENG 214 is a build-up course on ENG 111 and ENG 113. It comprises two sections: an in-depth study of the basic structures and functions of phrases and clauses in English, and a n introduction to the formal and functional structure of the different types of clauses. Phrases to be covered include the noun phrases, verb phrases, prepositional phrases, adverb phrases and adjective phrases. The second section engages students in the analysis and explanation of clause elements. Students are exposed to English texts and exercises that will enable them to be familiar with grammatically acceptable uses of English.
Why study English grammar at university level? How would a journalist/teacher ask or even answer an interview question when s/he cannot structure or interpret either Therefore, ENG 214 students need to be equipped with grammar skills for use in their future employment ventures
