INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial arts is a phase of general education that concerns itself with the materials processes, and product manufacture, and with the contribution of those engaged in industry. The learnings come through the student’s experiences with tools and materials and through his study of resultant conditions of life. Industrial arts therefore has general values that apply to all levels, and in a continuous program these values progressively intensive and are cumulative in their effect as student advances in maturity. “MM Proffitt”

CARPENTRY

CARPENTRY The art and trade of cutting, working and joining timber into building structures and furnitures . The traditional method of construction that utilizes wood.

ANCIENT EGYPT Ancient Egyptian drawings from 2000 B.C. depict wood furnishings such as beds, chairs, stools, tables and chests. Ancient Egyptian woodworkers were noted for regularly practicing their craft and developing their techniques that advanced the craft for future generations. They invented the art of veneering, gluing thin slices of wood together.

Chinese In China it is believed that woodworking started around 720 BC. During this time Chinese developed many sophisticated applications of woodworking such as measuring tools for making pots, tables and other pieces of furnitures . One of the famous carpenter in China is Lu Ban. He was credited as one of the originators of woodworking in China. According to history he invented plane, chalk line and other tools to China. He is also the author of the book “Manuscript of Lu Ban”. This book is a guide on how to make pots, tables and altars.

Japanese Japanese are considered one of the best carpenter in the world due to their advanced woodworking skills that can create big structures thru the mastery of their fitted joint. In Japanese wood joinery is called “ sashimono ”.

R oman The Roman Empire also had its share of skilled woodworkers. Wielding adzes, lathes, files, planes, saws, and drills, including the bow drill, they constructed aqueducts and waterworks using wooden scaffolding, built impressive warships and barges and erected strong and lethal battering rams and catapults for attacking enemy cities. They also crafted furniture, including tables and chairs, that stylistically represented animals’ arms or were carved to represent mythological creatures.
