The objectives of nursing theories are discussed in terms of their significance to the practice of professional nursing. An overview of current theories of nursing is also presented. The aim is to enable learners nurses to examine current conceptual models in nursing and relationship of empirical data and existing theories to the nursing practice.

After the completion of the course, the learners will be able to: 1. Discuss the structure and function of nursing theory. 2. Identify the need for theory, its purpose, and its development. 3. Describe the historical context of nursing theoretical development. 4. Discuss the systematic development, description, and evaluation of theory. 5. Comprehend the relationship among theory, research, and practice. 6. Describe aspects of current theories of nursing. 7. Apply selected conceptual models applicable to nursing. 8. Examine the application of selected models and theories in nursing practice.

Teaching strategies: Self-Study, Lecture and class discussion, written assignments test and quizzes Evaluation Criteria: Tests / Midterm examination Theory paper (Group assignment) Presentation Report Final examination Total 100%

UNIT OBJECTIVES Unit-I An Introduction to Nursing Theory: Discuss the importance of theoretical framework in nursing Appraise development of Nursing Practice theory Discuss concepts of Nursing theory Discuss overview of nursing process Discuss different level of theories

Unit-II Relationship between theory and the science and practice of nursing Relate the theory practice and research in perspective Discuss Nursing Theoretical evolution Explain perspective of Nursing theory

Unit III Categories of Selected Nursing Theories Discuss various Nursing Theories. Appraise the component of various nursing theories; description, purpose, concepts, definition. Discuss the application of nursing theories in nursing practice.

Guidelines for Theory Paper 40% This is a group assignment which is designed to enable the learners nurses to apply current theories of nursing as they relate to the practice of nursing. The detailed guidelines are listed below. Learners will select a theory. Using theory as framework, the learners will have to describe a patient’s/ client situation and the expected outcomes the learners wishes to achieve. Outline the process of nursing practice as articulated within the theory perspectives Using the theory and relevant research findings, describe how you as a nurse will facilitate the expected outcomes identified in this theory .

Evaluate the theories usefulness in providing direction for practice. Include a diagram of the theory as they applied to the patient /client.

The learners will work and present this assignment in the class and then will write report. Presentation 20% Written report 20%
