INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY -Naini Sharma Dept of Psychology Lovely Proffesional University
Introduction Long time back, students like yourself were told that the term psychology is derived from two Greek words psyche meaning soul and logos meaning science or study of a subject. Thus, psychology was a study of the soul or mind. But since then it has moved away considerably from this focus and established itself as a scientific discipline which deals with processes underlying human experience and behaviour
Psychology broke away from philosophy and physiology and emerged as a separate discipline some 100 years ago. Psychology is the science of human and animal behaviour. It includes the. application of this science to human problems. ( Morgan et al., 1986) • The scientific study of behaviour and mental processes.
Branches of psychology Educational psychology ♦ It is about Ways and methods of educating people. Developmental psychology ♦ Deals with aspects of human development over the entire span of life. ♦ Span of life covers from conception to death. ♦ Aspects of human development are the following:▪ Physical▪ Mental▪ Social
Social psychology ♦ It is the study of how people’s thoughts, feelings and actions are affected by others. ♦ Social psychologists study aggressive behaviors (example: violence, rape, alcoholismin the community) ♦ Social psychologists study conflict between groups, communities, and ethnic groups and methods of solving it.
Behavioral psychology ♦ It is about the role of environment in developing behavior ♦ It is about ways of learning new knowledge and skills Example: When introducing a new way of thinking in health start from what community members already know and proceed from the known to the unknown. ▪ It is about shaping human behavior using rewards. ▪ Toilet training in children▪ Dietary habit in the family ▪ Sanitation practices in the family
Clinical psychology ♦ It is about Psychological disorders and their treatment. ♦ It is about how to change the environment to prevent the prevalence of psychological disorders. Example: the role a health extension worker plays in sensitizing the bad effects of khat, alcohol, and tobacco on health and productivity .
Health psychology ♦ Emphasizes the preventive aspect of health than the curative aspect ♦ Health is not merely the absence of illness.Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being . Example: Teaching about personal hygiene is not enough. But the family and the society at large must participate in health programs. Recognizing the role of every member in the community is important to implement any health program.
Branches- Pure & Applied Known as the study of the human mind and behaviour, Psychology aims to explore the cognitive, conative, subconscious, conscious and implicit or explicit aspects of human behaviour. Being an area of study which has its roots in almost every other discipline, there are several branches of Psychology which are unique combinations of different subjects such as Education, Science, Crime, Health, Development etc.
Pure psychology Pure psychology , also known as academic psychology, refers to the scientific study of the human mind and behavior without any practical application or direct intervention. Pure psychology is a theoretical science while applied is a practical one. The aim of pure psychology is to extend and improve human knowledge while the aim of applied psychology is to extend and improve the conditions and phases of human life and conduct.
Difference between Pure & applied psychology
Applied Pschology Applied psychology on the other hand, is when applied psychologists use basic psychological knowledge to solve human problems such as equipment design, personnel selection and psychological treatment. In order to be involved in this type of field, at least a masters degree is required. This is because a psychology degree is too general whilst with a masters degree a specialty is chosen and studied thoroughly. With the specified knowledge learnt, they get to develop the better methods to solve problems faced by humans. Applied psychologists either become lecturers and do research, or work at mental health centres, hospitals industries, school settings or other applied settings.
Importance of Applied psychology Applied psychology is essential because it allows us to make discovered information usable, hopefully improving people’s lives in the process. Applied psychology is also important in guiding researchers in the questions they ask, as it’s the people working in the field who are most likely to discover problems that need answers. Thus, applied psychologists are a vital component of the process of discovering new knowledge.
