About This Presentation

LESSON 1 DOING PHILOSOPHY

Slide Content

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1.Distinguish a holistic
perspective from a
partial point of view.
2. Recognize human
activities that emanated
from deliberate
reflection.
3. Realize the value of
doing philosophy in
obtaining a broad
perspective on life.
4. Do a philosophical
reflection on a concrete
situation from a holistic
perspective.

ACTIVITY #1ACTIVITY #1
PICTURE ANALYSIS

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What do you notice from the picture?
2. Did anyone get the correct answer?
Why or why not?
3. What does this picture imply about our
effort to understand the realities of life
or answer our perennial problems?

ACTIVITY #2ACTIVITY #2
EVALUATE YOUR
ACTIONS

HOLISTIC POINT OF VIEW PARTIAL POINT OF VIEW
Looks at all aspects of the given
problem or situation.
Looks only at a limited number of
aspects of the given problem or
situation.
 All aspects are tied in together to
form a general overview of the problem
or situation.
 Conclusions are made based on
considering some, but not all, sides of the
problem or situation.
Example: A teacher listened first to both
stories of her two arguing students
before making any conclusion about the
issue.
Example: A teacher scolded Student A after
Student B accused him of stealing her pencil.
However, the teacher only listened to the story
of Student B, and not Student A before deciding
to scold the student

PHILOSOPHIZING
Philosophizing traces its
roots to when people
started asking “why” and
tried looking for an answer.
It is an attempt to logically
formulate, understand and
answer essential questions
that we ask.
What is the origin of
the universe and
everything that exists?
What is the meaning
and purpose of life?

NOTE:
Always remember that these are difficult
questions and almost impossible to answer. These
questions can only be answered by using reason
as a tool which can be expressed in different
forms such as the ability to reflect, ask
questions, explain one’s thoughts, and analyze
certain experiences and phenomena.

WHY IS THERE A NEED
TO PHILOSOPHIZE?
Which drives a man to
philosophize?

Sense of wonder (Plato)
• When confronted with experience,
we always wonder how it came
about.
• Man’s over bounding curiosity
drives him to ask questions.
• This perspective drives the need
for a philosopher to question,
examine, and learn more.

Doubt (Rene Descartes)
• In life, we will be faced with
several ideas and arguments which
present themselves as “truths.” A
critical and questioning perspective
is necessary to determine if indeed
these ideas or views are correct
or true.

Experience (Karl Jaspers)
• A human person is often confronted by
experiences that challenge his ideas and
frameworks. These experiences are called limited
situations and are often accompanied by feelings
of helplessness, anxiety, or dread.
• Philosophy provides us with a means to
understand adverse or challenging conditions and
rise above them and gain new knowledge and
perspectives.

Love of Wisdom
• To love wisdom is to have an insatiable desire for truth. A
philosopher does not seek knowledge to claim ownership of it, and one
who engages in philosophy is not satisfied with figuring out the answer
to a question.
• He seeks to continue to question, probe, and discuss to get to
the bottom of things.
• Socrates: “I know that I do not know…” it is in accepting this
state of ignorance that one can begin to learn and understand. “The
unexamined life is not worth living”. Nowhere is it more appropriate to
embark on philosophy than in an examination of our own life.

Importance of
Philosophical Reflection

Philosophical reflection is the process by which a
person undergoes a reflective state or evaluates
his or her experiences first before making any
related action. The use of philosophical reflection
is important as it enables thought to be
investigated using a deeper, holistic perspective. In
effect, actions are directed towards greater
sources of wisdom and truth.

WHAT ARE THE
PRACTICAL USES OF
PHILOSOPHY IN OUR
LIVES?

We don’t simply accept or reject
whatever is presented to us., e.g., issues
in social media.
1. Philosophy enables the person to engage in
critical analysis and interpretation of
concepts, definitions, arguments, and
problems.

Analyze the dilemma, identify
significant aspects, and come
up with solutions.
2. Philosophy also improves
problem-solving and decision-making.

Philosophy helps us to be more open to new
ideas.
Develop our communication skills.
Trains us to be very clear and precise
about our thoughts/sentiments.
3. A philosopher is a good communicator who
can clearly and adequately present his/her
ideas.

Product of philosophizing
Person’s ability to apply
knowledge to daily life.
4. Wisdom

Encourages us to know ourselves.
Help us know our strengths and weaknesses.
Helps establish our identity and determine our
purpose in life.
Our capacity for inquiry, critical thinking, and
reflection helps us to become better students,
professionals, etc.
5. Knowledge of philosophy contributes to self-
development.

REFLECT!
ACTIVITY #3ACTIVITY #3

DIRECTION:
Reflect on your past experiences and identify
a moment when you believed you “had no
choice” regarding your actions or decisions, or
you made a choice that you eventually
regretted. Reevaluate that situation using the
various views from a holistic perspective.
