WHAT IS A
CYCLORAMA
(CYC) WALL?
INTRODUCTION
The brightness and reflectivity of
cyclorama walls aid in spreading
light more evenly across a
studio. It helps to eliminate
shadows as well and can put
your subjects in their literal best
light.
Cycloramas are often used for
special effects using well-known
effects through green or blue
screen technology.
Not just for blockbuster films and
TV weather reports—they turn up
in music videos and are used by
photographers and commercial
directors who want neutral and
endless-looking backgrounds that
let them focus exclusively on their
subjects.

Modifiers and Strobes
work together to give your
images more lighting and
to diffuse the strength of
the light on to your subject
for a more soft even look.
MODIFIERS + STROBES
THE BRAND
Strobes for photography are high-intensity, short-duration light sources used to illuminate
subjects in a controlled manner. They are essential tools for photographers, especially in
studio settings or where precise lighting control is needed. Here’s a breakdown of their
key features and uses:
Key Features
High Intensity Light
Strobes emit a powerful burst of light, much stronger than most continuous light
sources. This helps in freezing motion and capturing sharp images.
Short Duration
The light burst lasts for a very short time, typically milliseconds or even shorter.
This minimizes motion blur and helps in capturing crisp details.
Control
They often come with adjustable power settings, allowing photographers to control
the intensity of the light according to their needs.
Color Temperature (KELVIN)
Strobes provide consistent lighting in terms of color temperature and intensity,
which is crucial for maintaining uniformity across multiple shots.
Uses of Strobes in Photography
Portrait- create flattering lighting that enhances the subject’s features.
Product- helps in eliminating shadows and highlighting the details of the products.
Action - used in action photography to capture fast-moving subjects without blur
Fashion -help in creating dramatic lighting effects and highlighting the textures and
colors of the clothing
WHAT ARE
STROBES?
Modifiers are accessories used with photographic lighting (including strobes) to alter and
control the quality, direction, and intensity of light. They help photographers shape the light
to achieve desired effects, whether it be softening shadows, focusing the light, or creating
specific textures. Here are some common types of modifiers:
Common Types of Modifiers:
Softboxes
Purpose: Diffuse light to create a soft, even illumination.
Description: Rectangular or octagonal boxes with a diffusive front panel. They
spread the light over a wider area, softening shadows and reducing harshness.
Umbrellas
Purpose: Spread light for a broader, softer effect.
Description: Reflective umbrellas bounce light off their inner surface, while shoot-
through umbrellas diffuse light through a translucent material called a “sock”. They
are easy to set up and provide wide, soft lighting..
Beauty Dishes
They often come with adjustable power settings, allowing photographers to control
the intensity of the light according to their needs.
Color Gels
Purpose: Change the color of the light.
Description: Thin, colored sheets placed over the light source. They are used to add
color effects or to balance the color temperature of the light
Reflectors
Redirect light to fill in shadows or highlight specific areas.
Diffusers
Soften light and reduce harsh shadows.
WHAT ARE
MODIFIERS?
COLOR GELS
Camera triggers are devices
used to remotely control the
operation of a camera or
external flash units. They
allow photographers to take
photos without physically
pressing the camera's
shutter button or to
synchronize off-camera
flashes with the camera's
shutter
CAMERA TRIGGERS
Fill light is pretty
straightforward. The white
side of the V-Flat acts like
a giant bounce surface
and throws any light
coming off of the strobe
back onto the model. Say
the left side of the model
was too dark, the V-Flat
would lighten up the dark
area on the left of the
model.
V-FLATS - FILL LIGHT
THE BRAND
Negative fill means to literally absorb and
remove light. Black has the ability to do
that and just like white adds light, black
removes light. Say you wanted to add more
shadows onto your subjects face for a
more moody and dramatic look but there is
a white wall on the side of them causing
the light to bounce all around the room and
and in areas you don't want. Simply add the
black side of the V-Flat to the side of the
subject you want darker and it will soak in
and stop the extra light in it's tracks.
V-FLATS - NEGATIVE FILL
AKA SUBTRACTING LIGHT
THE BRAND
Imagine you're trying to take a catalog
image for a brand, and you need a pure
white background. You typically would
need lots of lights with umbrellas pointed
at the background to get this affect. But by
using two V-Flats with two strobes pointed
into them on either side of the background
you get this affect with a beautiful even
spread of light. To control how much light
you need just dial up or down the power.
