Dogri is one of the Indian regional languages spoken mainly in the Jammu region of Jammu & Kashmir (Union Territory) , and also in parts of Himachal Pradesh and northern Punjab . People who speak Dogri are called Dogras , and the region where it is spoken is known as Duggar Desh .
Dogri is a very old Indo-Aryan language , meaning it developed from Sanskrit — like Hindi and Punjabi. It has been spoken for hundreds of years , long before India became independent. It was traditionally written in the Takri script , but today most Dogri speakers use the Devanagari script (the same script used for Hindi). In 2003 , Dogri was officially added to the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution , making it one of India’s 22 official languages .

Human society is slowly losing many of its old languages. In India too, many local and tribal languages are disappearing because fewer people speak them now. According to a report by UNESCO , India has the highest number of endangered languages — meaning many languages could soon die out completely.
In the last 50 years, India has already lost more than 220 languages , says D.G. Rao , the former director of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL). One of the languages facing this danger is Dogri , spoken mainly in parts of Jammu and northern India.
Because English is now used in schools, colleges, and offices, children are not learning their mother tongues as much. As a result, local languages like Dogri , Bhojpuri, Kodava , and many tribal dialects are slowly disappearing. Experts say that when a language dies, a part of culture, history, and identity also dies with it. People are now calling for schools and families to teach and speak regional languages more often so that they can survive for the next generation.
