WHO IS JAMES BANK’S? James Albert Banks is an educator who has been called the “father of multicultural education.” - Became the first black professor in the college of education at the university of Washington in Seattle and was a founding director of UW’s center for multicultural education, which was renamed the Banks center for educational justice when Banks retired from UW’ in 2019.
BI0GRAPHY BORN : September 24, 1941 (NEAR MARIANNA, ARKANSAS) PARENTS : Matthew Bank’s Lula Holt Bank’s EDUCATION : McCullough Union School (Elementary and Junior high School between 1948 and 1957 ) He graduated in 1960 from the Robert Russa Moton High School in Marianna. Between 1966 and 1969 he received his masters and PhD Degrees in elementary Education and Social Science from michigan State University
-Banks married Cherry A. McGee, a college professor and author, on F ebruary 15, 1969 ; the two have written several books and article together. 1969 - Banks joined the faculty of UW college of education. 1971 and 1973 – served as assistant professor 1973 – he became a full professor 1992 – Banks founded the Center of multicultural education at the university and became a director.
Banks has written a number of books: Teaching strategies for ethics studies Cultural diversity and education Citizenship education: Global perspectives; Race, culture, and education. CONTRIBUTION TO EDUCATION He defined four major approaches to multicultural Curriculum : Contribution approach Additive approach Transformation approach Social action Approach
WHAT IS MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION?
- E nsure educational equity for members of diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic groups, and to facilitate their participation as critical and reflective citizens in an inclusive national civic culture.
-Seeks to create equal educational opportunities for all students, including those from different racial, ethnic, and social-class groups.
According to James Banks (1995) “multicultural education as a field of study is designed to increase educational equity for all students.” According to James Banks (1997) -Multicultural education is an idea, an educational reform movement, and a process.”
BANK’S FIVE DIMENTIONS OF MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION Content Integration: using examples from a variety of cultures and groups into subject areas. Knowledge Construction: T he extent to which teaches help students understand and determine how perspectives and biases influence how we construct knowledge. Equity Pedagogy: H ow teachers modify their teach to facilitate the academic achievement of students from diverse racial, cultural, gender, and social class groups.
Prejudice Reduction: Lessons and activities teachers use to help students develop positive attitudes towards different racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. Empowering School Culture: Restructuring grouping and labelling. Interaction of staff and students across racial lines.
GOALS OF MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION Creating a safe, accepting, and successful learning environment for all Increasing awareness of global issues Strengthening cultural consciousness Strengthening intercultural awareness Teaching students that there are multiple historical perspectives Encouraging critical thinking Preventing prejudice and discrimination
BENEFITS OF MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION The main benefits of multicultural education are that discrimination in all forms decreases in communities in which it is practiced, and that students develop more pluralist paradigms. They also become more involved in their society .
Multicultural education values different students culture and prepares students to thrive in a diverse work. At its core, multicultural education fosters equality, justice, and equity, and it establishes the reality of philosophical ideals in classroom environments.
