Jean Piaget Three Kinds of Knowledge Imelda C. Grado

Knowledge is construction resulting from a child actions Three kinds of knowledge 1.Physical Knowledge: Discovery 2.Logical-Mathematical knowledge: Invention 3.Social Knowledge

Physical Knowledge: Discovery Physical properties of objects and events Events, size, shape, shaped, weighted Acquires physical knowledge Manipulating (acting on) senses Aa young boy who is playing with sand may pour the sand from one container to the another. Feel it with his hands or pour it into his mouth Fully accurate knowledge of objects cannot be acquired directly by reading, looking at pictures, or listening of what people say(they are all forms of symbolic representation) The child cannot construct a n accurate schema of sand unless he acts on sand

Logical-Mathematical Knowledge: Invention Is knowledge constructed from thinking about experience with objects and events Acts on objects construction invents Actions of the child on objects Example: Number of concepts (LMC) A little girl may be playing with a set of 11 pennies .She puts in a row and counts them. There are 11 of them. She puts them in a circle and counts them again. She counts 11 pennies. The child puts the pennies in a box and shakes them up. Removed by the box and counted the pennies still add up to 11. Active experience Child construct the concept (arrangement, order) Logical-mathematical knowledge is not acquired from reading or listening to people to talk. It is constructed from actions on objects

Social Knowledge Cultural or social groups ome to agree by convention Constructed by children from their actions on ( interactions with)other people Example: Rules, laws, moral, value, ethics, and language sytem Fully accurate knowledge cannot derived directly by reading or from listening to people Example: Teacher talk Knowledge can be constructed
