JUDICIAL HANGING STEPS IN JUDICIAL HANGING
The face of the condemned person is covered with a dark mask. Condemned person is made to stand on a platform which open downwards through the mechanism of a lever. Round the neck a rope is looped with the knot under the angle of the jaw. Length of rope is sufficient to allow a drop of five to seven feet or more according to weight, age, and build of the person, so as to cause fracture of cervical column.
As lever is pulled, the person drops to the length of the rope. The sudden stoppage of the moving body associated with the position of the knot causes fracture-dislocation of the cervical column at the level of second and third, or third and fourth cervical vertebrae. The upper cervical spinal cord is stretched or torn. Laceration of neck structures occurs. Muscular tears in the Sternomastoid are often seen.
A transverse tear of the intima of carotid artery with extravasation of blood within its wall may be observed. The pons and medulla may be injured. As damage to spinal cord or brain stem occurs and death takes place. Heart may continue to beat for 15 to 20 minutes. Muscle jerking may occur for some time.
