June 2022
This month we wanted to celebrate the arrival of the summer with activities about holidays and
travel. Our B2 First students and C1 Advanced students will read about jobs that involve
travelling and consider the advantages and disadvantages of this. Our B1 Preliminary and B2
First students will look at options for holiday activities around the UK. Finally, our young learners
will talk about summer and compare their ideas of a perfect holiday. Happy teaching!

1.Travelling for a living

Level: B2 First / C1 Advanced
Skills: Speaking, Reading and Writing
Interaction: individual and whole class activity
Time: 55 minutes

Warm up (10’) – whole class activity
• Do you / would you like to travel as part of your job?
• What would be your dream job?
• If you could travel to any country in the world, where would you go?
• If you could move to another country, where would you choose to move to?
• What are the advantages and disadvantages of travelling for work?
• What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in another country?
Reading (15’) – individual activity
You will read about four people who travel as part of their jobs. For questions 1 – 10, choose
from the options (A – D). The options may be chosen more than once.
Which person
1. thinks their language skills are important for their job?
2. decided they wanted to change their career?
3. found working to deadlines difficult?
4. talks about the perception that others have of their job?
5. is motivated by the opportunity to help people at work?
6. was not chosen for their job the first time they applied?
7. mentions that they will visit several different countries in 2022?
8. doesn’t travel to tourist destinations?
9. thinks aspects of their childhood helped them to get their job?
10. needs to find out important details about the area surrounding their accommodation?

A. The first time Sebastian applied for a role that would send him to every destination on The
New York Times’ “Places to Go” list he didn’t get the job. A year later he applied again and was
chosen for the position. In 2019, Sebastian travelled to a new destination every week — from
Bulgaria to Qatar and Uzbekistan to Vietnam. The job required writing articles, posting on
social media and shooting photographs and videos. “I often say it was one of the greatest
experiences of my life … but also the hardest,” he said. “I didn’t have a day off for a whole
year, and the constant pressure of deadlines was hard to cope with.” He mostly credits luck for
getting the job, but he believes his upbringing and enthusiasm for travel helped. His father is
from India and his mother is Colombian, and he grew up in places like Hong Kong, Australia,
India and Indonesia.
B. Stewart started out in the yachting industry as a chef in 1998, and immediately fell in love
with the lifestyle, work and travel. After a year and a half of cooking, he made a career switch.
He decided he wanted to get his licence and become a captain. According to Stewart, captains
do a bit of everything from trip planning and accounting to HR duties for the crew and golf

3

What are the advantages and disadvantages of living
and working abroad?
• Speaking a different language
• Career prospects
• Family and friends
bookings for guests. ″We endure long days, and sometimes weeks without days off,” he said,
but “I couldn’t imagine doing this … and not loving it.” Stewart expects to travel for nine
months in 2022. He’s already moved from the Caribbean to Central America and Mexico. From
the West Coast of the United States, he’ll go to British Columbia and on to southeast Alaska,
then fly to Florida and finish the year in the Bahamas.
C. Amy works for a UK-based luxury travel and villas company. She travels from London to Italy
to evaluate new homes. During a recent trip, she travelled from Milan to Lake Como, down to
Tuscany, then further south to the towns of Amalfi and Positano. Her next trip is to Puglia,
“because it’s beautiful and rugged and really popular at the moment,” she says. Amy analyses
everything from the pool to the size of the beds. She says she needs to know whether there
are cats on the estate, whether there is a dirt track making it more difficult to get to the villa
and where the sun rises and sets. Amy often stays in the villas and also explores local areas, so
she can advise on restaurants, boat rentals and new services. “I think people think it’s all
glamorous [but] it’s a lot of work,” she says.
D. Sandra is a communications specialist for the United Nations. Her job doesn’t take her to
typical travel spots and her work trips are anything but overnighters. She has lived and worked
in many countries around the world and says that each place has its cultural highlights and
warmth. Her roles last from several months to years. Originally from New York, she speaks five
languages and says her language abilities are partly why she’s been urgently deployed to cover
humanitarian crises. “At night, I type until I can’t keep my eyes open any longer, and then start
again at 6am the next day,” she said. Sandra says that she feels “driven to support those in
greatest need,” and that “the most meaningful part of humanitarian communications is to
provide a platform for people to tell their stories”.

Follow up (30’) – individual
Your class has listened to a debate about the advantages and disadvantages of living and
working abroad. You have made the notes below:

Write an essay discussing two of the points in your notes. You should explain whether living
and working abroad has more advantages or disadvantages. You may, if you wish, make use of
the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as
possible.
Some opinions expressed in the debate:
“It can be difficult to live in a country where
you don’t speak the language”
“Learning a new language and living in a
different country can give you better job
prospects”.
“If I lived abroad, I would miss my family
and friends”.

2. Choosing a holiday

Level: B1 Preliminary
Skills: Speaking, Reading and Writing
Interaction: whole class and individual activity
Time: 40 minutes

Warm up (10’) – whole class activity
• What activities do you enjoy when you go on holiday?
• What did you do on your last holiday? Where did you go?
• What plans do you have for this summer?
• Do you like to try new sports or challenges during your holidays?
• If you could try any new challenge, what would it be?
Reading (15’) – individual activity
You will read eight texts about different activities that a travel company offers around Britain.
Read the comments from customers below and decide which holiday would be most suitable
for each person.
1. Paula is interested in learning a new skill during her holidays. She would
like to take a course, but isn’t sure which one to take. She likes
walking and admiring the beautiful scenery and nature when she goes on
holiday. She doesn’t like water sports and prefers to visit the countryside
rather than the beach.

2. David has never visited the UK before and wants to see lots of different
places. He has lots of free time and would like to take a long trip for two
weeks or more. He also likes nature, sight-seeing and learning new skills.
He doesn’t enjoy camping or going to the mountains, he prefers the coast.
3. Andy is excited to try more water sports at the beach this summer. He
tried canoeing last year and would like to try something new this year. He
also loves camping and wants to spend summer evenings around the
campfire.

4. Hannah is interested in sports like cycling and yoga. She doesn’t have
much free time and is looking for a weekend trip. She prefers to spend
the holidays in the mountains rather than at the beach or in the
countryside. She doesn’t enjoy camping and wants to stay in a nice hotel.

5.Emma likes going on holiday to the beach more than to the mountains
or the countryside. She enjoys water sports, but doesn´t like sailing or
travelling by boat. She wants to sleep in a nice hotel and eat great food.
