DIRECT AND REPORTED SPEECH

In direct speech, the message of the speaker is conveyed in his own actual words without any change. “….” QUOTED SPEECH Has a reporting clause, reporting verb, reported clause and reported verb .

Reported speech is a report on what someone else said or wrote without using that person’s exact words. Note: The use of the word “that” is optional in a reported speech.

Basic rules in changing DIRECT SPEECH (DS) to REPORTED SPEECH (RS)

1. CHANGES IN PERSON OF PRONOUNS

1 st person pronoun (I, we) in reported clause are always changed according to the subject of the reporting clause. Examples: DS: Anna said, “ I am happy.” RS: Anna said that she was happy.

2 nd person pronouns (you) in reported clause are always changed according to the object of the reporting clause. Examples: DS: Joy said to Paul, “ You passed the exam.” RS: Joy told Paul that he passed the exam.

3 rd person pronouns (she, he, it, they) in reported clause are not changed. Examples: DS: Joana said, “ She looks sad.” RS: Joana said she looked sad.

2. CHANGES IN VERBS -Tenses of verbs

If the reporting verb is in present tense or future tense , then no change is required to be made in the verb of reported clause. This verb could be in any tense. Examples: DS: He says , “ I am going to the library.” RS: He says that he is going to the library.

If the reporting verb is in past tense , then reported verb will be changed depending on its tense . Examples: The boy said , “ I ate pancakes.”

TENSES OF VERBS Present simple The man said, “ I follow the health protocols.” DIRECT SPEECH Present Progressive She said, “ The student is answering his module.” REPORTED SPEECH Past simple The man said that he followed the health protocols. Past progressive She said that the student was answering his module.

TENSES OF VERBS Present perfect They said, “ We have prepared the lessons.” DIRECT SPEECH Past Simple My friend announced, “The meeting started .” REPORTED SPEECH Past perfect They said that they had prepared the lessons. Past Perfect My friend announced that the meeting had started .

TENSES OF VERBS Past Progressive Shane said, “The grade 7 students were playing at the school grounds. DIRECT SPEECH Past Perfect The boy said, “ I had studied abroad.” REPORTED SPEECH Past Perfect Progressive Shane said that the grade 7 students had been playing at the school grounds. Past Perfect The boy said that he had studied abroad.

2. CHANGES IN VERBS -Modal verbs

MODALVERBS will/shall Bryan said, “I will try to finish my activities. DIRECT SPEECH c an My father said to me, “ I can pick you up.” REPORTED SPEECH w ould/should Bryan said that he would try to finish his activities. c ould My father told me he could pick me up.

3. OTHER SIGNIFICANT WORD CHANGES

4. CONVERSION OF INTERROGATIVE AND IMPERATIVE DIRECT SPEECH

The reporting verb said or said to is changed to asked , demanded or inquired.

INTERROGATIVE For a yes/no question , if or whether is used in a place of that . Example: DS: Joseph said to Jana, “Will you attend the flag ceremony?” RS: Joseph asked Jana if she would attend the flag ceremony.

INTERROGATIVE For a WH question, neither if is used nor any other word is added. Example: DS: My little brother said to the waitress, “What are you doing?” RS: My little brother asked the waitress what are you doing.

IMPERATIVE For a imperative(command), the reporting verb said or said to is changed to ordered to or commanded to . Example: DS: The librarian said to me, “ Keep quiet .” RS: The librarian ordered me to keep quiet.

IMPERATIVE For a imperative(request), the reporting verb said, said to or told is changed to requested to. Example: DS: He told me. “ Please call me .” RS: He requested me to call him.

ACTIVITY 1 INSTRUCTIONS: Compare and contrast the direct and reported speech using a V enn diagram . Write your answer in 1 whole sheet of paper.

ACTIVITY 2 INSTRUCTIONS: Recall your best experiences in life, the rules that you follow at home and the rules we follow this pandemic. Write at least 5 examples of direct speech and rewrite it into reported speech. Example: DS: News reporter said, “ There will be having a Bayanihan Vaccination.” RS: News reporter announced that there would be having a Bayanihan Vaccination.

ACTIVITY 3 INSTRUCTIONS: Change the following sentences from direct speech to reported speech. My classmates said, “We will submit our modules tomorrow.” “Barack Obama has won the 2012 election”, the reporter announced. The teacher said, “You shall follow schedule in answering your modules.
