Kindergarten Math: Addition within 50 Welcome to our Math Adventure! We will explore adding numbers. Get ready to have fun. You will become an addition superstar! by Reyann Rose Soriano
What is Addition? Putting things together Addition means combining items. Find out how many there are in total. This is done by adding the numbers together. The plus sign The plus sign (+) means "add". It shows us that we need to add the given numbers. For example, 2 + 2. Example 2 apples + 1 apple = 3 apples. This shows how addition works in real life. Adding similar items together.
Adding with Pictures (Up to 10) 1 Count the objects Count the objects in each group. Then, count them all together to find the total amount. 2 Example 1 3 stars + 2 stars = ? Count the stars. Then you can write the correct number in the space. 3 Example 2 4 balls + 1 ball = ? You can add the balls to get the total number of balls. Add them all together.
Adding on a Number Line (Up to 20) 1 Start at first number Start at the first number on the number line. This will be the starting point for adding. Locate it first. 2 Jump forward Jump forward the number of times indicated by the second number. Each jump indicates adding one more. 3 Example 8 + 4 = ? Start at 8, then jump 4 spaces forward. This helps visualize the addition. The answer will be 12.
Adding Using Your Fingers (Up to 10) Use your fingers Use your fingers to help you count. Fingers are a very handy tool. You can use your fingers any time you need. Show the first number Show the first number on one hand. Show the second number on the other hand. For example, 2 fingers on one hand and 3 fingers on the other. Count all fingers Count all your fingers to find the answer. This makes it easy to see the total. Use your hands to make the number.
Let's Practice! (Numbers up to 20) Problem 1 Solve: 5 + 7 = ? Use the previous methods. Write down the answer. Problem 2 Solve: 9 + 3 = ? Use your fingers. Or try using the number line method. Problem 3 Solve: 6 + 8 = ? Take your time and add up the total amount. You can even count objects.
Adding with Tens and Ones (Introduction to Numbers up to 50) Tens Numbers can be broken down into tens. 10 ones combined make a ten. It helps to think about that fact. Ones Numbers can also be broken down into ones. Ones are the individual numbers. They are used to make the larger total. Adding When adding, add the ones first, then add the tens. This makes it easier to add bigger numbers. Keep that in mind.
Adding with Tens (Numbers up to 50) 10 + 10 = 20 1 20 + 20 = 40 2 30 + 10 = 40 3
Real-World Addition (Up to 50) Sticker Scenario You have 20 stickers. Your friend gives you 15 more. How many do you have? Add them up. What's the total amount? Birds in a tree There are 32 birds in a tree. Then, 8 more fly in. How many are there? Combine the birds. How many in total?
