Our very own Book Club Kumararani Meena Muthiah Mat Hr Sec School No. 4, Crescent Avenue Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai 600 020
Our Design To get students more involved with the school by creating new opportunities that they can identify and relate with.
How it all started Brainstorming A gush of ideas A inter-school football match, an intra-school culturals, car pooling????? All were at loggerheads How do we make any of this work????
Inner Peace We put each of our ideas on paper to check how implementable it is. But hey….Can’t we start small??? We finally found our Inner Peace and as Master Oogway states in Kung Fu Panda “There are NO accidents”. So what is it that we started small????
The Answer Shouldn't change begin within??? Thus, began our quest Our own fellow students were our targets What is it that we wanted to add to ourselves apart from marks? Fun and creativity….. The ones that don’t hamper our studies
The Change We wanted our own activity clubs Communication, Literary, Health, Art & Culture…. Could we not revive something that’s dying???? The spirit of the book rose and spoke to us: “Imbibe me in you and you will see a change”
The Implementation How many of us read anymore? Lets do a survey… And sadly, the results weren’t too pleasing. But, nothing to deter us from the mission. We rampaged the library, hassled the librarian, spoke to our principal and gained their support to start Our very own Book Club. We initiated the book club through a formal ceremony with only our staff members and we, the core members.
The Implementation We then set out to find students who would be interested to join the club. We put out charts and ads for a book review competition… Teasers were put up on notice boards that made students keep guessing as to what this is all about? Yes, until now, the book club is a tightly guarded secret.
The Results We had around 40 entries coming in and the good ones were shortlisted The ones that did not make it will be paired up with the shortlisted students This we hope will encourage them to read more
So, how does our club work?? Week 1 First Wednesday of every month: Collect books from the library, distribute it amongst the members Following Thursday & Friday: Have 15 minutes of group book reading sessions Week 2 & 3 Members to take their books home and finish up on reading the books and write a short synopsis on the book Week 4 Last Wednesday of every month: Members to discuss their synopsis and collectively come up with a “Must reads list” Following Thursday: Publish the “Must reads list” on the notice boards, the current set of books to be returned to the library
The Future As Mary Kay Ash once said: “Enthusiasm is contagious. You can start an epidemic.” With this experience, we aim to start other clubs to address other areas of interest
