Language across curriculum:
A conceptual discussion

Meaning & definition
It is a modern concept that a
foreign language should be
taught out of the traditional
language classroom situation
by using contextual language
learning techniques.

Need & Significance

Need & Significance
Most of the students are not able to use the foreign language even after completing
graduation as well as post graduation with higher grades.
Assignments become Xerox copies because of the language deficiency.
Most of the research scholars are not able to write their thesis themselves so that
plagiarism goes on being practiced by academic community.
Most of the students do struggle to get admitted in foreign universities because of
the deficiency in communicating in the foreign language.
The new career trends are in need of people who are fluent in foreign language.
FL language is an inevitable factor in handling modern technology.
Self study and referring is less effective without proper language.

The logic behind the inclusion
of LAC in BEd. Curriculum
LAC
A Presentation by Hathib.K.K.
Asst. Professor of Education, KSTC
By Hathibk.k.

Why is it in BEd. Curriculum.
What is the logic behind the inclusion?
A huge majority of the teachers at present are struggling when using the FL.
Most of the teachers are practicing adjustment teaching in classroom.
Students tend to follow the wrong model of the teachers.
Most of the teachers are not able to make use of modern technology, because they
lack command in FL.
Most of the teachers are not able to give clear instructions, as they lack authority in
FL.
Most of the teachers do not encourage clarification of doubts by students, as they
are not confident enough to have ‘on the spot conversation’ in FL.
Most of the teachers are not able to manage group activities effectively, as they
lack communication skill in FL.
The new career trends are in need of people who are fluent in foreign language.
Most of the teachers are providing market notes to students, because of this
deficiency
Most of the teachers do not know how to praise students in FL

It helps the learners to collect technical terms related to different subjects.
It helps the students to submit original assignments free of plagiarism.
It opens a vast career world before the students.
It helps the students getting admitted in foreign universities.

CONTENT BASED INSTRUCTION (CBI)
CONTENT INTEGRATED LANGUAGE LEARNING(CILL)
SKILL ACQUISITION CONCEPT
COGNITIVE THEORIES
The Principles of
LAC are on the
Basis of these
Four Major
Concepts
By Hathibk.k.

Natural language acquisition occurs in context;
natural language is never learned divorced from
meaning, and content-based instruction provides
a context for meaningful communication .
second language acquisition increases with
content-based language instruction, because
students learn language best when there is an
emphasis on relevant, meaningful content rather
than on the language itself; "People do not learn
languages and then use them, but learn
languagesby using them”
It facilitates negotiation of meanings.
It facilitates comprehension.
It facilitates concrete learning of language.
It offers functional language learning
It facilitates more complex language learning
By Hathibk.k.

As Language is a
skill, it is important
to go on practicing
it until one
becomes an expert
user of it. It can
never be acquired
by reading books
on it.

skills (including language) and knowledge
follow a general sequence of states of
learning fromthe cognitive stage
The presentation of coherent and
meaningful information leads to deeper
processing, which results in better learning.
Information to related information
promotes better learning (it is that has a
greater number of connections
Anderson’s Study
Presents these Findings
By Hathibk.k.

Facts and skills taught in isolation need
much more practice and rehearsal before
they can be internalized or put into long
term memory; coherently presented
information (thematically organized) is
easier to remember and leads to improved
learning. information that has a greater
number of connections to related
information enhances learning, and
content acts as the driving force for the
connections to be made.
Singer’s Study Presents
the Following Finding
SINGER
By Hathibk.k.

Content-based instruction
develops a wider range of
discourse skills than does
traditional language instruction
(because of the incorporation
of higher cognitive skills).
Byrnes’ Study Presents
