thathavemadetakingandusingphotographsfunctionalbehaviors.Wedidthis
basedonthefourlevels,whichNikolaasTinbergensuggestedforanalyzing
whyanimalsbehaveinaparticularway.Includingfindingsfrommultiple
disciplines,wedevelopedanovelconceptualframework—the“Mental
UtilizationHypothesisofPhotography.”Itsuggeststhatpeopleadopt
photographybecauseitmatcheswithcorehumanmentalmechanismsmainly
fromthesocialdomain,andpeopleusephotographyasacognitive,primarily
socialcopingstrategy.Ourframeworkcomprisesarangeoftestable
predictions,providesanewtheoreticalbasisforfutureempiricalinvestigations
intophotography,andhaspracticalimplications.Weconcludethatphotography
hasbecomeahumanuniversal,whichisbasedoncontext-sensitivemental
predispositionsanddifferentiatesitselfinthesocialandsocietalenvironment.
