, I will give a general overview of what learning disabilities are and what there are not. Now, there seems to be a lot of confusion about what learning disabilities really are? and so my goal today is to help clear some of those things up. in fact, I've decided to do a series on the different types of learning disabilities where I will go into more detail on each type but today, we're just going to start with a brief overview of what they are? and what they are not? Before I go into details about what learning disabilities are I would like to tell you what they are not so many people get learning disabilities confused with learning problems, there is a big difference! learning disabilities is not the result of hearing and vision problems. Those things can impact one's learning, but those things do not cause one to have a learning disability. learning disability is not the result of autism, learning disabilities is not the result of having an intellectual disability. What we formerly known as mental retardation. learning disabilities are not emotional disturbances. And learning disabilities is not the result of some type of disadvantage whether it's culturally, whether it is economically, or whether it's a child who has not had the opportunity to receive an education. Those things do not constitute one with a learning disability. Federal regulation refers to learning disabilities as a specific learning disability and it comprises several different disorders that are all individual and unique within themselves and I think that's kind of where a lot of the confusion comes from. What we say if somebody has a specific learning disability? What does that mean? Well, let's go over the definition of what a specific learning disability really is. The individuals with Disabilities Education Act provides that specific learning disability means a disorder and one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken, or written which disorder may manifest itself. In the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations under the specific learning disability umbrella.

UNIT 3: TYPOLOGY OF LEARNERS WITH
SPECIAL NEEDS
B: LEARNERS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES
OBJECTIVES
• DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS TYPES OF LEARNING DIFFICULTIES THAT CAN
AFFECT A PERSON'S ABILITY TO READ, WRITE, AND PERFORM MATH
CALCULATIONS.
• UNCOVER MISCONCEPTIONS AMONG INSTRUCTORS ABOUT STUDENTS
WITH LD AND THEIR CAPACITY FOR LEARNING.
• PROVIDE EXAMPLES OF THE FINEST TECHNIQUES FOR ENHANCING THE
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES.
WHAT ARE LEARNING
DISABILITIES?
> ARE PROBLEMS THAT AFFECTS THE
BRAIN'S ABILITY TO RECEIVE, PROCESS,
ANALYZE OR STORE INFORMATION
> THESE PROBLEMS CAN MAKE IT
DIFFICULT FOR A STUDENT TO
LEARNAS QUICKLY AS SOMEONE WHO
ISN'T AFFECTED BY LEARNING
DISABILITIES.
Strong converging evidence supports the validity of the concept
of specific learning disabilities (SLD) this evidencee is
particularly impressive because it converges acrross different
indicators and methodologies. the central concept of SLD
involves disorders of learning and cognition that are intrisinc to
the individual. SLD
are specific in the sense that these disorders each significantly
affect a relatively narrow range of academic and performance
outcomme
CONCEPT OF LD (2000):

Dyscalculia

Dyslexia.

Dysgraphia
LEARNING DISABILITIES
IN PARTICULAR, PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSIONALS SHOULD STUDY
THESE SEVEN LEARNING DISABILITIES:
1. Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems
identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding).
Also called a reading disability, dyslexia is a result of individual differences in areas of the
brain that process language.
2. Dysgrraphia its broadest definition, dysgraphia is a disorder of writing ability
at any stage, including problems with letter formation/legibility, letter spacing,
spelling, fine motor coordination, rate of writing, grammar, and composition.
3. Dyscalculia a learning disorder that affects a person's ability to do math.
Much like dyslexia disrupts areas of the brain related to reading, dyscalculia
affects brain areas that handle math- and number-related skills and
understanding.
1. Heredity
2. Problems during pregnancy
and birth.
3. Accidents after Death
NATURE AND CAUSES
LEARNING DISABILITIES LOOK VERY DIFFERENT FROM ONE
CHILD TO ANOTHER. ONE CHILD MAY STRUGGLE WITH READING
AND SPELLING, WHILE ANOTHER LOVES BOOKS BUT CAN'T
UNDERSTAND MATH. STILL ANOTHER CHILD MAY HAVE
DIFFICULTY IN UNDERSTANDING WHAT ITHERS ARE SAYING OR
COMMUNICATING OUT LOUD. THE PROBLEMS ARE VERY
DIFFERENT, BUT THEY ARE ALL LEARNING DISORDERS.

3.
Be an advocate for your child
1.
Keep things in perspective. A learning disability isn't
insurmountable
2.
Become your own expert.
TIPS ON HOW TO HANDLE LEARNERS WHO
HAVE LEARNING DISABILITIES.
Remember that your influence outweighs all
others
Focus on strengths, not just weaknesses
Recognizing a learning disorder.

6.
The class will be divided into Three groups.
each group will be given a task, a "Role Play"
the role play is all about the 3 kinds of Learning
Disabilities.
You are about to act on how to handle if you
have students having;
GROUP 1-Dyslexia.
GROUP 2- Dysgraphia
GROUP 3- Dyscalculia
ASSESSMENT
Instruction:
Create a three-paragraph composition that is “All about you” for your assignmen
using only one text type. I'll be providing you with a rubric as a reference”.
