ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION THEME 1: ASSESSMENT TERMINOLOGY ANDREA ZULAY HIDALGO AÑARUMBA Pedagogia de los idiomas nacionales y extranjeros

Assessment refers to the various methods and tools used by educators to evaluate, measure, and document students' academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs. The Test as a Method Useful tool for teachers. Involves techniques, procedures, or items managed by the teacher. Must be explicit and well-structured. Measurement Function of Tests Provides valuable information about test-taker's performance. Can measure general abilities or specific skills. Reporting Measurement Results Clear reporting is essential (e.g., feedback on writing errors, numerical scores). Helps understand test-takers' backgrounds and abilities, and ensures score interpretation is accurate.

F ormal and informal assessment FORMAL ASSESSMENT Formal assessments, like quizzes, exams, and standardized tests, evaluate students' knowledge at specific times. They can be used before learning to guide instruction or after to assess performance. Some are given multiple times a year to measure student growth. INFORMAL ASSESSMENT Informal assessments evaluate students using non-standardized methods and qualitative data. Teachers use these assessments for immediate feedback and instructional adjustments. Examples include exit tickets, project-based assessments, and choice boards. They allow students to demonstrate knowledge in authentic, discipline-specific ways. VS

Formative assessment helps teachers identify student strengths and weaknesses, enabling real-time adjustments to instruction. It includes methods like in-class discussions, quizzes, and surveys, which provide immediate feedback and engage students in their learning process. TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS Summative Assessment Summative assessment evaluates student learning at the end of an instructional period. It provides grades or scores and covers comprehensive content areas. Examples include final exams and term projects. Feedback from summative assessments can guide future learning efforts.

ASSESSMENTS PURPOSES Achievement Tests : Measure specific learning within a lesson, unit, or course. They can diagnose student needs and inform instructional planning. Achievement tests can be formative or summative and help determine if educational objectives are met. Diagnostic Tests : Administered at the beginning of a program to identify the skills that need development. They provide a clear picture of what content needs to be covered, helping tailor instruction to student needs. Placement Tests : Determine the appropriate level for students within a program. These tests assess both productive and receptive skills to place students in the correct course level. Proficiency Tests : Evaluate overall language competence across various skills. Examples include TOEFL. These tests provide comprehensive scores and align with standardized proficiency levels. Aptitude Tests : Predict a learner’s potential success in language learning. They identify strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences, helping to tailor instruction accordingly.

Principles of Language Assessment 𝒫𝓇𝒶𝒸𝓉𝒾𝒸𝒶𝓁𝒾𝓉𝓎 Refers to the feasibility of administering, scoring, and interpreting a test. Practical tests are efficient, cost-effective, and manageable within available resources and time constraints. 𝓡𝓮𝓵𝓲𝓪𝓫𝓲𝓵𝓲𝓽𝔂 Ensures consistent test results under similar conditions. Reliable tests produce stable and repeatable outcomes, unaffected by external factors like scorer variability or test administration conditions. 𝓥𝓪𝓵𝓲𝓭𝓲𝓽𝔂 Measures the accuracy of what a test is intended to assess. Valid tests align with instructional content and objectives, ensuring they accurately evaluate the intended skills or knowledge. 𝓐𝓾𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓲𝓽𝔂 Reflects real-world tasks and applications. Authentic assessments engage students in meaningful activities that mirror real-life challenges, making the assessment relevant and practical.
