Learning from Experience Presented by Eman Hassan Roll number 22014198-163
1. Amount Of Challenges: A challenging situation involves solving difficult problems and making risky decisions. According to CCL(Centre for Creative Leadership) , the most challenging jobs are those of managers because they have the responsibility of handling and managing different situations. Each situation is unique, and managers must learn new strategies for each one. Additionally, they have to: 1. Influence People Without Authority: Managers often need to influence people without having direct authority over them. This means they don’t have the power to give orders directly but still need to convince and motivate people to follow their plans. 2. Handle External Pressure: Managers must handle pressures coming from outside the organization, such as market competition, customer demands, and economic conditions.
3. Receive Less Support from Superiors: Managers often receive less guidance and support from their superiors. They need to make decisions on their own and manage their resources effectively. 4. Handling different situations: Managers have to handle and manage different situations. Every situation is different and new methods and strategies have to be found in every situation.
2. Variety of Tasks or Assignments: Growth and learning are greater when job experiences are diverse as well as challenging. Diverse job experiences require managers to adapt to new situations and deal with new types of problems:- Diverse job experiences mean that managers have to adjust to new situations and deal with new types of problems. Repeated success in handling one type of problem reinforces the tendency of a person to interpret and handle new problems in the same way, even though a different approach may be more effective: If a manager repeatedly handles the same type of problem successfully, they tend to try to handle new problems in the same way, even though another approach might be more effective .
Thus, it is beneficial for managers to have early experience with a wide variety of problems that require different leadership behavior and skills: Therefore, it is beneficial for managers to have experience from the beginning with different types of problems, which can teach them various leadership behaviors and skills. Some ways to provide different job challenges include: Giving special developmental assignments. Rotating managers among different functional subunits of the organization. Assigning them to both line and staff positions. Providing both foreign and domestic assignments.
3. Accurate, Relevant Feedback: More learning happens in operational assignments when people receive accurate feedback about their behavior and its consequences, and they use this feedback to analyze their experiences and learn from them. Unfortunately, useful feedback about a manager’s behavior is seldom provided within operational assignments, and even when available it may not result in learning: Unfortunately, useful feedback about a manager’s behavior is rarely provided in operational assignments, and even if it is available, it does not necessarily result in learning.
People who are defensive and insecure tend to avoid or ignore information about their weaknesses. People who believe that most events are predetermined by uncontrollable external forces (i.e., people who do not have a high internal locus of control orientation) are less likely to accept responsibility for failure or use feedback to improve their skills and future performance. The obstacles to learning from experience are greatest at higher levels of management.
