Footingarestructuralelementsthattransmittothesoil
columnloads,wallloadsorlateralloads.Iftheseloadsareto
beproperlytransmitted,footingmustbedesignedtoprevent
excessivesettlementorrotationandtominimizedifferential
settlement.
Introduction
Tolimitsettlementwithintolerablysmallamount,itis
necessary.
i.Totransmittheloadofthestructuretoasoilstratumof
sufficientstrengthand
ii.Tospreadtheloadoverasufficientlylargeareaofthat
stratumtominimizebearingpressure.

Ifsatisfactorysoildirectlyunderliesthestructure,itismerely
necessarytospreadloadbyfootings.Suchsubstructureare
knownas“spreadfoundation.”

Ifadequatesoilisnotfoundimmediatelybelowthe
structure,ifbecomesnecessarytousedeepfoundationssuch
aspilestotransmittheloadtodeeper,firmerlayers.

be continuous
