selected fruits, vegetables
•Liaquat Corp. (Gujranwala) and Pacific (Lahore)
pack dehydrated fruits

from water, sugar, organic acids, flavours,
colours, carbon dioxide
• Locally prepared on small scale replaced
by international brands
• More than 20 large units in all big cities
• Some leading brands - Coca Cola, Fanta,
Sprite, Seven up, Pepsi Cola, Teem, RC
Cola.

•Still beverage industry started early 1960’s
• Shezan and Benz (Lahore) pioneered
• Numerous plants established, produce ready to
drink fruit based or synthetic still beverages
• Available in different packaging materials - Tetra
Pak, glass bottles (returnable and non-
returnable), non-returnable polyester (PET)
• Some manufacturers - Shezan, Benz, Golden,
Country Juice, Poly and Maaza.

•Pure fruit juices packed by very few firms
• Among these:
– Nestlé Milkpak (Lahore)
– CDL Foods (Lahore)
– Shezan (Lahore).

Wheat & Grain Milling IndustryWheat & Grain Milling Industry
• Raw material - wheat, rice, corn, other
cereals
• Wheat milled in local chakkies or modern
fully automatic roller flourmills
• Over 400 units operating, mainly in
Punjab and Sindh
• Products obtained - Whole-wheat flour
(atta), maida, and suji.
•Bran separated from grains as by-product.

• Presently 58 large baking units with about 162
ovens
•Developments in equipment fabrication within
country encouraged proliferation
• Capacity about 1,32,000 tonnes per annum
• Vita Pakistan - 13 production units
• Other prominent names - Dawn, Bunny’s,
Wonder, BP, Marygold
•Primary products - leavened bread, buns, rusks,
cakes and cookies.

• Installed capacity 5.5 million tonnes sugar
• Limited supply of sugarcane resulted in
nearly 45 percent capacity utilization for last
few years.

Food processing industry second largest
employer of labour
Due to certain social, cultural and economic
constraints, fruit, vegetable and meat processing
industries not much developed
Beverage industry (still and carbonated) taken
big stride in past few decades
 Sugar industry, vegetable oil and ghee
manufacturing, flour milling, and baking industry
provide consumer with variety of hygienic and
nutritious products.
