LEISURE
AND
RECREATION
MANAGEMENT
Week 3:
Values and Benefits of
Recreation and Leisure

WHAT IS
LEISURE?
Leisure as Time
The portion of the day not occupied by work
or essential tasks
Example: Weekend afternoons spent in a park
or at home reading

WHAT IS
LEISURE?
Leisure as Activity
Voluntary pursuits done during free time
for enjoyment
includes hobbies, sports, arts, travel, or
simply relaxing
Example: Painting, hiking, gardening, or
playing board games

WHAT IS
LEISURE?
Leisure as State of Mind
A psychological experience of freedom,
satisfaction, and intrinsic motivation
Not just what you do, but how you feel
while doing it
Example: Feeling peaceful while walking by
the beach, even if it's a simple activity

WHAT IS
RECREATION?
It is the activities people experience during
leisure time. However, not only any activity will
do. Recreation needs to provide satisfaction in
some manner.
The term recreation comes from the Latin word
recreatio which means “restoration of health”.

RECREATION
Recreation is regarded as a life
enhancing experience that
results from freely chosen
activity.

RECREATION
Several definition are as follows:
1.Escape: getting away from it all
2.Self-testing; challenge; achievement and self worth
3.Feeling as part of nature; beauty
4.Communion; love; friendship and identification with a
group.
5. Personal Development; learning
6.Refreshment; personal renewal
7.Feelings of Excitement, freedom, creativity
8.Unity of mind and body; wellness.

THE PLEISURE
PRINCIPLE
PLAY + Recreation + Leisure = PLEISURE
George Torkildsen coined this term in 1992 to
get the heart of leisure experience. He said
that Leisure managers must create
environments and opportunities and provide
services and programs for various people to
enjoy leisure.

THE PLEISURE
PRINCIPLE
PLAY + Recreation + Leisure = PLEISURE
1.Children’s play is full of playfulness and
spontaneity.
2.Recreation carries a respectable badge -
doing things that are good for people.
3.Leisure is a broader, less constrained term
than recreation, encompassing a wide
range of activity.

PLEISURE PRINCIPLE TO
LEISURE MANAGEMENT
ACTIONS1.The right condition - leisure programs must provide
various options for different people. There must be
both freedom of choice and the possibility of self-
initiation and spontaneity.

LEISURE MANAGEMENT
ACTIONS
2. Satisfaction - for leisure to be fulfilling, some
experiences must be present; self- expression,
challenge, simulation, joy, playfulness, pleisure
exeperiences.

LEISURE MANAGEMENT
ACTIONS
3. Positive outcomes - leisure should produce some
positive outcomes, such as accomplishments in holistic
development.

Positive experiences provide satisfaction and
satisfaction results in consumer interest that can lead to
life - enhancing experiences, one of the leisure goals.
This customer satisfaction can also lead to profitable
business outcomes.

It’s difficult to provide for people’s pleasure. Leisure and
recreation enables people to engage in activities that
are personally worthwhile.
But the undesirable effects, and in some cases the only
one, unpleasant noise.

Discussion of issues

DISCUSSION OF
ISSUES
Barking dog The owner may occasionally use the dog as
part of their casual leisure, such as relaxation
and sensory stimulation.
It illustrates the complex issue that might
arise when an incensed neighborhood tries to
put an end to the animal.

DISCUSSION OF
ISSUES
loud musicSome people enjoy listening to loud music for
enjoyment, while others nearby find the
music annoying.
