LENT
LENT …… a season of Preparation The Church prepares for the great celebration of Christ Paschal Mystery The whole church thinks and prays about the new life Christ shares with us in Baptism Those who are baptized in the Church prepare to renew their Baptismal vows Final time of preparation for those who will celebrate the sacraments of Initiation
ASH WEDNESDAY Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days We mark our foreheads with blessed ashes They are a sign of sorrow for our sins and of hope of having life forever with God
LENT During Lent we use Purple and Violet in our churches and during worship Sign of our need for reconciliation with GOD The colour helps us remember that Joy and Happiness will come from Christ death It is a season of simple living We make special efforts to pray , fast and to do penance. We are called to do these things all year round but during Lent it takes on a added meaning.
3 PILLARS OF LENT PENANCE PRAYER ALMS GIVING P E N A N C E P R A Y E R G O O D DE E D
PENANCE : Lent is a time of conversion , of turning back to GOD. GOD always calls us to be with him and to respond to his Love. Lent is a special time to think about the ways we follow God’s law. It’s a time to change our Lives and be a better follower of Christ. PENANCE is an important part of this conversion. Doing penance helps us to turn to GOD and to focus on the things that are important in our lives as Christians. It’s a way of being sorry for our sins. Penance restores our friendship with GOD and the Church.
Ways to do PENANCE No Fast food No watching Television No meats only Vegetables Giving up activities like shopping
PRAYER : Lent is a time we try to spend more time with God and Prayers help us to do this During Lent we devote extra time to daily prayers and worship Spending more time reading and reflecting on the Scripture. We pray specially for people who are preparing to receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation We gather together to reflect on the Stations of the Cross.
GOOD WORKS : During Lent we show concern to the people in need. A way to do this is practice a work of mercy or give our time for special deeds We follow Jesus’s example of providing for the hungry and caring for the sick. Common practices are visiting the sick in hospitals ; visits to the prison if possible ; volunteer in food donations. We should remember that these good works should happen all year round.
PALM SUNDAY :
PALM SUNDAY / PASSION SUNDAY It is the Sunday before Easter Triduum known as Passion or Palm Sunday. On this day the Church recalls Jesus Passion : The judgement to put him to death The carrying of the cross His suffering and dying on the cross We also commemorate his triumphant entry into Jerusalem just days before he was to die.
On Palm Sunday a joyful procession takes place to celebrate Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem. The faithful gather away from the Church building , palm branches are blessed with holy water. The story of Jesus entry into Jerusalem is read with a short homily given by the celebrant. The procession then goes into the church with the people waving their palm branches and singing Hosanna to praise and welcome Jesus as once the crowd did in Jerusalem.
Palm Sunday Service When the crowd arrive inside the Church the Mass begins During the Liturgy of the Word the gospel reading is the Passion of our Lord Jesus. This is one of the longest gospel reading during the year. It helps us to prepare for the celebration of the Easter Triduum that will begin later during the week.
Blessed palms : The palm branches that are blessed on Palm Sunday remind us that Lent is a time of renewal and hope. Many people make crucifixes of the blessed palm and keep it at their homes These palm branches are burnt before Lent of the next year to makes ashes for Ash Wednesday.
