Holistic vs. Partial LESSON 1 Point of View

HAVE YOU EVER? Have you ever been judged by someone who only knew one side of your story? How did it feel ?

Lesson Targets At the end of the lesson, I can: define the concepts of holistic and partial point of view ; differentiate a holistic perspective from a partial point of view using real-life examples ; and appreciate the value of adopting a holistic point of view in forming judgments and decisions.

In Philosophy

POINT OF VIEW → a method or approach through which we interpret situations, events, or problems HOLISTIC VS PARTIAL

Greek word " holos " HOLISM all, entire, totality HOLISTIC POINT OF VIEW

HEURISTIC THEORY encourages awareness not only of the external world but also of what happens inside ourselves and others our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors how all these relate to the greater system around us

HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE → a kind of system that aims to determine and explain the whole or totality of a given system by examining the behaviors and activities of certain component parts

HOLISTIC POINT OF VIEW Looks at all aspects of the given problem or situation. → All aspects are given importance when making conclusions. → All aspects are tied in together to form a general overview of the problem or situation.

All parts must be understood in relation to the whole. HOLISTIC POINT OF VIEW

EXAMPLE IN MEDICINE HOLISTIC VIEW

HOLISTIC POINT OF VIEW Example: A teacher listened first to both stories of her two arguing students before making any conclusion about the issue or situation.

PARTIAL POINT OF VIEW → Looks only at a limited number of aspects of the given problem or situation . → Conclusions are made based on considering some, but not all, sides of the problem or situation.

PARTIAL POINT OF VIEW Example: A teacher scolded Student A after Student B accused him of stealing her pencil. However , the teacher only listened to the story of Student B, and not Student A before deciding to scold the student.

ACTIVITY: KNOW ME MORE Differentiate between a holistic perspective and partial thinking by completing the Venn Diagram.
