PRAGMATICS
(PART 1)

WHAT IS PRAGMATICS?
Study of meaning as communicated by a speaker (or
writer) and interpreted by a listener (or reader). (Yule, 2008)
The study of the relation between language and context
(Levinson, 1983)
Concerned with the interpretation of linguistic meaning in
context (Fromkin, 2002)
The study of how language is
interpreted by listener based on its
context.
General Concept

PRAGMATICS IS STUDY OF...
SPEAKER
MEANING
The analysis of what
people mean by their
utterances than what
the words or phrases in
those utterances might
mean by themselves
CONTEXTUAL
MEANING
The interpretation of
what people mean in a
particular context and
how the context
influences what is said
HOW MORE
GETS
COMMUNICATED
THAN IS SAID
Explores how a great
deal of what is unsaid is
recognized as part of
what is communicated
THE
EXPRESSION OF
RELATIVE
DISTANCE
The assumption of how
close or distant the
listener is, speakers
determine how much
needs to be said

Pragmatics exceeds the
basic level of linguistic
units (phonemes,
morphemes, lexems, sign,
sentence…etc.) by
including context in its
analysis.

REGULARITY
Regularity derives from the
fact that people are members
of social groups and follow
general patterns of behavior
expected within the group.
“How are you?”
what will you answer?

Regularity in language use derives
from the fact that most people
within a linguistic community have
similar basic experiences of the
world and share a lot of non-
linguistic knowledge.
“I found an old bicycle lying on
the ground. The chain was
rusted and the tires were flat.”

LET’S ANALYZE...
“The duck ran up to
Mary and licked her.”

THANK YOU
VERY MUCH!
