GEOGRAPHY

“Geography is all around us, and we are part of it”

The word geography comes from two greek words, “geo” means “ earth ” and “ graphy ” means “to write something about .” Geography literally means “to write about the earth.”

The Five Themes of Geography

Location Where is it? Why is it located there? Location is the fundamental theme of geography and refers to where a place is on the Earth’s Surface.

1. Absolute Location Is given in degrees of longitude and latitude (global location) or street address (local location) Example: Manila, Philippines is 48 degrees North latitude and 2 degrees East Longitude. The White house is located at 1700 Pennysylvania Avenue. 2. Relative location Relative location depends upon point of reference. Example: Near, far, a short drive

2. Place What is it like? Refers to a location’s unique physical and human characteristics 1. Physical Characteristics Landforms, bodies of water, ecosystems

2. Human Characteristics Bridges, roads, buildings, culture, languages, and beliefs.

3. Human-Environment Interaction How do people interact with and change their environment? We depend on the environment Example: People depend on rivers for water and transportation.

We adapt to the environment Example: We adapt to the environment by wearing clothing suitable for summer (summer dress) and winter (coats).

We modify the environment Example: People modify environment by heating and cooling building for comfort.

4. Movement How are people and places linked by communication and the flow of people, products and information or ideas? Refers to the movement of people and ideas Human Movement Examples: Cars, Trucks, Trains,

Information Movement Examples: Phones, computer, television, radio and magazines

5 . Regions What are the regions and how they are useful Regions is concerned with how areas are similar or different based on their physical and cultural characteristics Example: Time Zones, Common Lanuages , Official Borders, Economy, Geographic divide the world into regions to help them interpret information.
