Topics:LaboratoryEquipmentandsafety
❑Discuss about laboratory equipment
❑How to use this equipment
❑Precautions before using chemicals in lab
Work ethics for a chemistry Laboratory
As any other endeavor in science, working in chemical laboratory also requires following
certain work ethics.
➢Never work in a laboratory without proper supervision.
➢Use laboratory coat and apron while working in the laboratory.
➢Always handle the chemicals carefully.
➢Do not carry the reagent bottles to your work place.
➢If poisonous gases are evolved in your experiment, make sure that the experiment is carried
out with proper exhausted system.
Analytical Chemistry
Analytical chemistry is a quantitative science. It is defined as the study of the separation,
identifications and quantification of the chemical components of natural and artificial materials.
Analytical chemistry divided into two areas-
1.Qualitative analysis
2.Quantitative analysis
❖Qualitative analysis:It deals with the identification of substances. I mean it is concerned with
what elements or compounds are present in the sample.
❖Quantitative analysis:It is concerned with the determinations of how much of a particular
substance is present in a sample.
❑Titrimetric Analysis:
Titrimetric analysis is a large and powerful group of quantitative procedures based on measuring
the amount of reagent of known concentration that is consumed by an analyte.
NaOH + HCl= NaCl + H

❖Titration:Titration is a common laboratory method of quantitative chemical analysis that is
used to determine the unknown concentration of a known reactant.
❖Titrant: The reagent of a known concentration is called the titrant.
❖Analyte: Analyte is solution whose concentration is not known.
❖Endpoint: The endpoint is the point at which the titration is complete, as determine by an
indicator.
❖Indicator:Indicator is a substance used in titrations to indicate the completion of a chemical
reaction, usually by change of color.
